--A 22-year-old woman was pulled from the Mississippi River Tuesday, May 23, after her vehicle went into the water north of Mill Avenue bridge north of Brainerd. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident, reported at 3:22pm in Unorganized Territory. According to the sheriff’s office, a vehicle left the roadway and went into the water where the river begins to widen into Rice Lake by the bridge. There is a small pull-off spot at the location without a steep bank and the vehicle appeared to go through or create a small opening in the trees and shrubs at the river’s edge. The driver was pulled from the vehicle by a few good Samaritan’s, the sheriff’s office said. She was treated by an ambulance crew at the scene. Information on what led the vehicle to go into the river, or how far the vehicle was out into the water was not released.
--More information released on a shooting in St. Cloud Tuesday. Police arrested an 18-year-old man after he allegedly fired a handgun at a vehicle with people inside in a St. Cloud neighborhood. Officers were called around 1:50, forcing nearby South Junior High and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School to take action and go into a lockdown as precaution. Sixteenth Avenue was briefly closed while investigators canvassed the scene and talked with witnesses and neighbors. Police say the alleged shooter and the victims knew each other. The St. Cloud man was taken to jail on suspicion of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. No motive for the shooting was released. The incident remains under investigation. No one was injured.
--A St. Cloud woman was arrested and charged after a high-speed chase and displaying a weapon. Hutchinson Police say the incident began Sunday morning when a suspicious woman was reported at the Outpost convenience store on Highway 15 North in Hutchinson. After getting the license plate number and description of the suspect, officers responded to the scene but were unable to find the vehicle.
A short time later an officer saw the vehicle traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed near Highway 7 and Garden Street east of Hutchinson. The officer initiated a traffic stop but the driver failed to stop and a pursuit began with speeds reaching 90 miles an hour. The driver then rapidly slowed down and came to a complete stop. The officer made verbal commands to the driver but the driver began to flee again, with speeds reaching over 100 miles an hour. The vehicle went into the ditch north of Glencoe. Authorities say the woman had a gun on her and after not complying with instructions, a McLeod County Deputy fired a less-lethal round, striking the suspect. The suspect dropped the gun and after continuing to grab it, an officer deployed another less-lethal round, striking and disabling the suspect. 28-old Kayla Daily was taken into custody, taken to Glencoe Regional Health to be evaluated, and then to the McLeod County Jail.
--The Pine County Sheriff’s Office says it fielded 21 unintentional 911 calls on Sunday alone. If operators cannot hear or understand a person on the other end of the line, they often still have to send emergency services to where the call came from out of an abundance of caution. This can tie up resources that are needed elsewhere. The department says you should lock your phone to prevent accidental dialing and disable emergency calling shortcuts. Benton, Stearns, Sherburne and other counties have also had 911-dialed calls done by accident. Officials say if you dialed 911 by accident, please stay on the line and explain the situation to the dispatcher. Do not hang up out of embarrassment or fear of getting into trouble.
--Tony Housey from Camp Ripley spoke yesterday on KLTF and mentioned that it is very busy at the Military Base. Soldiers are there training, helicopters, trains, convoys of vehicles are coming and going into the base through the summer months. There is some changeover as many top members of regiments are turning over to the next in command during the summer months, pictures of those events are on the Camp Ripley facebook page. There will be an open house in September at Camp Ripley and the Military Museum is still hoping to break ground later this year in their new site off of Highway 371 at Highway 115. Housey want to remind those to please remember this holiday weekend the reason for Memorial Day of the Men and Women who died defending our Country in all of the Nation's battles. Keep them in mind or attend one of the services, programs or events for Memorial Day on Sunday at the State Veteran's Cemetery is his near Camp Ripley north of Little Falls or at the Camp Ripley Chapel on Monday. --There are many Memorial Day weekend events as the State Veterans Cemeteries around the State will have programs all on Sunday at 2pm, music at 1:30pm that includes north of Little Falls, Duluth and Preston will have programs on Sunday as the large ceremony at Fort Snelling Cemetery will be on Monday. The St. Cloud Area Metropolitan Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day Observance at the St. Cloud VA. The ceremony is free and the public is encouraged to attend. You're asked to bring you're own lawn chair as seating is limited. The St. Cloud Municipal Band will provide music. The ceremony begins at 10am on Monday in front of Building 96. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the lobby of Joe Faber Field. --There will be a retirement celebration for Father Ken Popp on Sunday, June 4th with Mass at 10:30am lunch served from 12-2pm on the church grounds and outdoor music entertainment until 4pm. Father Popp is celebrating 40 years as a priest and will retire later this year. All are welcome to the event at St. Joseph's Church in Pierz.
