Sales of animal antibiotics rose in 2016. In its 2016 Summary Report, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) says sales are up by 2 percent over last year and are up 26 percent since 2009. The FDA says 97 percent of antibiotics were sold over the counter in 2015. Sales of drugs approved for animal growth promotion purposes dropped slightly from 72 percent to 71 percent last year. Beginning January 1st, animal antibiotics will no longer be available over the counter and will require a veterinarian’s oversight before they can be used on livestock.
