According to a recent study from the USDA’s Economics Research Service, American farmers only receive about 10 cents of each food dollar spent in the U.S. Since 2014 the farmers’ share has increased 1.7 cents from each dollar spent, while food processing’s share has gone down 2.1 cents since 2009. The report also shows more U.S. consumers are dining out rather than purchasing food for home. As a result, the share of each food dollar spent that goes to restaurants is 32 cents, the highest amount in more than 20 years and the grocery stores’ share is at its lowest since 2002 at about 12 cents per dollar. The survey was part of ERS’ Food Dollar Series and examined 12 industry groups and their value-added contributions.
