Hog slaughter numbers have been big in recent weeks and a livestock market specialist says that’s putting added pressure on pork prices. Last week’s slaughter was the third largest weekly kill in history. Scott Brown with the University of Missouri says record slaughter numbers are increasing concerns about the availability of shackle space in the latter part of 2016.  “It’s going to be nip and tuck and I don’t want to over emphasize where that may go,” he says.  “Just the numbers that we’re running today tells me we have a lot more pigs we’ll have to deal with as we get into this last quarter of 2016.” Last week’s slaughter was up nearly 5 percent from the previous week and 8 percent higher than 2015. Friday’s Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report comes out at 2pm.
