Forecasters say at least four unconfirmed tornadoes may have touched down in western Minnesota when strong storms moved through the state. Sunday’s hot, sticky weather gave way to storms that toppled trees and power lines. A severe thunder storm moved through the Brainerd Lakes area, with the primary damage being reported on the west side of Crow Wing County from Baxter to Pequot Lakes. The storm left damage to homes, vehicles and other property with downed trees and power lines. Several thousand residents were left, and still remain without power. Numerous roads were left impassable, and are still treacherous due to downed trees and power lines. 911 was inundated with calls, and two public service announcements were broadcasted during the storm asking residents to only call 911 for emergencies, and not to report power outages and downed trees. Travel was also not advised. The storms damaged the stands at Brainerd International Raceway and left a section in a pile of twisted metal. Utility crews are working to restore service to about 6,000 Xcel Energy customers and 5,900 others with Minnesota Power. Wind gusts reached 80 mph in Douglas and Morrison counties.
