The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will provide $1 million in Clean Water Funds to support the Forever Green Agricultural Initiative at the University of Minnesota. The initiative includes projects that address both current agricultural production needs, as well as longer term breeding research to develop new cropping systems that will promote improved water quality and landscape diversification. The MDA will oversee the distribution of funds and progress reports for the following eleven projects: Advanced Management Practices for Enhancing Profitability of Intermediate Wheatgrass, Craig Sheaffer, Professor, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics; Advancing Hazelnut Micro-Propagation, Jerry Cohen, Professor, Department of Horticultural Science; Agronomics Development of Winter Annual Oilseeds in a Field Corn Production System, Scott Wells, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics; Developing Genomic Resources for Helianthus Divaracatus to Facilitate the Development of Perennial Sunflower for Food Production and Wildlife Services, Yaniv Brandvain, Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Biology; Effect of Cover Crops on Water Use and Nitrogen Leaching in Corn and Soybean Cropping Systems, Axel Garcia y Garcia, Assistant Professor, Southwest Research and Outreach Center; Effect of Refinement and Dough Conditioners on the Quality of Intermediate Wheatgrass for Food Applications, Baraem (Pam) Ismail, Associate Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition; Field Pennycress Breeding Project Support, James Anderson, Professor, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics; Integrating Winter Annual Cover Crops into Corn and Soybean Rotations in Minnesota, Gregg Johnson, Associate Professor, Southern Research and Outreach Center; Intermediate Wheatgrass Breeding Support using Phenotypic and Genotypic-based Selection Methods, James Anderson, Professor, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics; Population Dynamics of Soybean Cyst Nematode in Winter Annual Oilseeds Senyu Chen, Professor, Southern Research and Outreach Center; Sustaining Hazelnut Breeding and Agronomic Research at the University of Minnesota, Lois Braun, Research Associate, Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics.
