Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) is celebrating 30 years of helping students and teachers learn about agriculture, food and natural resources. The program provides educators and classrooms with free educational resources to advance agricultural literacy. This public and private partnership was first forged in 1985 and its ongoing mission is to keep agriculture relevant in all K-12 Minnesota classrooms. Focused educational materials have always been a backbone of the program and help embed agricultural content into the context of K-12 education. In conjunction with the 30 year celebration, MAITC is putting a new spin on the popular student AgMag and AgMag Jr. magazines. The AgMag series provides readers with not only impactful information, but engaging agricultural activities. The AgMag is published in three editions annually, and the AgMag Jr. is published in two editions: both are free to educators. “MAITC is excited to continue the 30-year tradition of providing the student AgMag magazine series free to teachers and students across the state,” said the program’s Education Specialist, Sue Knott. “We are equally excited to present a new look to the print resources and launch the new AgMag website to provide an additional platform for students to gain knowledge about agriculture, food and natural resources.” The Minnesota AgMag series is complemented by an interactive website, offering teachers and students extended learning opportunities about agriculture. Plus, Companion Teacher Guides for AgMag and AgMag Jr. are located on the website, www.mnagmag.org. MAITC also offers educators the opportunity to apply for an Agricultural Literacy Grant. Recipients of this grant may be awarded up to $1,000 for featuring engaging agricultural lessons or projects in the classroom. For the grant application visit www.mda.state.mn.us/maitc.
