Stearns County divers completed their search for a missing man’s body in Quarry 8 at the Quarry Park & Nature Reserve Wednesday but did not find it. 30-year old Phillip Miller of St. Cloud went missing August 6th. Authorities found his car at the park and some personal items near Quarry 8. Miller’s family said he had battled depression for about 10 years. Dive crews were unable to stay in the water long enough to find him in the zero-visibility conditions of the quarry. So last week, the county began using a commercial pump to drain the quarry. On Monday, the water level of the quarry — originally about 100 feet deep and containing 4.7 million gallons of water — was lowered to about 10 feet deep. Wednesday morning, divers were lowered to the water by a crane to resume their search. The investigation will now turn over to the St. Cloud Police Department. Investigators had found personal items near Quarry 8 and Miller’s car at the park, leading them to believe he had died by suicide in the quarry. Investigators do not plan to drain additional quarries. Estimates indicate the quarry could take eight to 10 years to naturally refill with rain, snow and ground water. The nearly empty quarry presents a little bit of a hazard. The Sheriff’s Office recommended they put up a permanent fence around the quarry.
