It started on Saturday and continues through next Friday that more than 1100 Minnesota National Guardsmen, 320 other military members from across the country, and nearly 500 members of state agency partners and other civilian participants in the Vigilant Guard exercise at three venues across the state: Duluth, Camp Ripley and Saint Paul. The Vigilant Guard exercise program is a national program designed to stress local capabilities, foster National Guard and State interagency partnerships and make our communities more prepared for emergencies. The exercise will focus on the emergency response to two nearly simultaneous fictional events impacting the Duluth area: a hazardous materials railway incident, and a catastrophic weather event. Additional exercise scenarios will be conducted at Camp Ripley to take advantage of their state of the art training facilities. Exercises like Vigilant Guard provide a unique opportunity for civilian and military organizations of various jurisdictional levels to train and test emergency procedures.
