St. Joseph Police Officer Vic Weiss has been awarded the Medal of Valor for his courageous actions during an off-duty incident that prevented further harm to an assault victim and led to a suspect’s arrest. He got the award during a recent St. Joseph City Council meeting. The incident occurred on March 8th, 2025, while Officer Weiss was cycling on the Lake Wobegon Trail. He was approached by a man who said another individual on the trail had attempted to rob him and assaulted him. Rather than continuing on his ride, Weiss immediately called police dispatch and stayed with the victim. At one point, it became clear that both he and the victim might need to flee the area; however, the exhausted victim said he was too tired to run. Despite having the opportunity to escape on his bicycle, Officer Weiss decided to stay and protect the victim. The suspect soon approached and tried to steal Weiss’ bike and rob him. During the altercation, the suspect punched Weiss multiple times. Weiss fought back and ultimately knocked the suspect into a nearby ditch and held him at bay until backup arrived. Weiss suffered a fractured hand and foot during the confrontation. The victim was not further harmed, and the suspect was taken into custody. The Medal of Valor is awarded to officers who demonstrate exceptional courage and heroism in the face of danger while serving their community. Officer Weiss has since recovered from his injuries and returned to duty with the SJPD.
