–Law enforcement are reminding residents as we enter the upcoming tax season to be mindful of ongoing telephone scams that often occurs this time of year. An individual may try to call you and inform you that you owe back taxes. They will state if you fail to call the person back they will send law enforcement to your home to arrest you. It is very important to remember that this is not the way the IRS conducts business. They will never call you without warning and demand payment, with no opportunity for appeal, and threaten a law enforcement response. If you receive such a call you are encouraged to hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency. You may also report the scam call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
