NEWS

–One person was killed at a construction site east of Royalton High School after being run over by a dump truck Friday around 11:00am. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office arrived to find that 60-year-old Vernon Barthel of Rice had been backed over by a dump truck driven by 57-year-old Randy Stanoch of Motley. Barthel was airlifted to North Memorial in Robbinsdale where he was pronounced dead. The dump truck involved in the incident is registered to Joe’s Excavating Inc. out of Sartell where both workers were employed. The incident remains under investigation.

–The Little Falls Community High School is hosting a StandUp4U Community Awareness meeting tonight at 6:30pm in the auditorium. The meeting will include an informational presentation from local law enforcement on emerging drug issues, presentation from County Attorney Brian Middendorf on the consequences of youth drug use and drug possession, and a performance by the Little Falls Student Improv Troupe with a powerful message to empower youth to stay away from drugs and to make positive choices.

–Two girls who ran away from a Brainerd group home have been found safe. Brainerd Police were notified that 16-year-old Natasha Wright and 13-year-old Shyanne Waite were located in New York Mills on Friday morning. Thanks to all who helped in finding the girls.

–Authorities are offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to those responsible for an arson fire at a Quince Street apartment complex in Brainerd around 8:30pm on November 16th. The building was occupied at the time, however, no one was injured and firefighters were able to extinguish flames quickly. The fire was contained to a small area in the complex’s basement. Subsequent investigation by the state fire marshall determined the fire was arson, with combustible materials in the basement intentionally set on fire in the storage/utility area. The building sustained $100,000 in damages as a result of the fire. The reward is being offered for information resulting in the arrest and conviction of the arsonists. –Police arrested a Minneapolis man on Wednesday after he forced his way into a home and threatened a resident. Police responded to a knife complaint in the 600 block of 11th Street South. 23-year old Tyrell McCoy forced his way into the home, hid inside of a closet and waited until the resident arrived. McCoy was in possession of a knife and threatened the victim. Officials say McCoy was arrested on scene and is facing charges of first degree burglary, second degree assault, terroristic threats and interference with a 911 call.

–The Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site and The Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum in Little Falls are once again hosting a candlelight hike on New Year’s Eve. The hike will take place on trails lit with luminaries between the two sites, is scheduled from 5:00– 8:00pm. Both museums will be open during the event, giving participants an opportunity to view exhibits, warm up, and enjoy refreshments. If there is snow accumulation by December 31st, people are encouraged to bring snowshoes. This event is free and open to the public. Volunteers are needed for setting up and lighting the luminaries a couple of hours in advance of the event. Those interested in volunteering or who want more information can call either 616-5421 or 632-4007.

–Governor Mark Dayton has ordered flags to remain at half staff through sunset today for the victims of last week’s shooting in California and those that died at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941.

–A St. Cloud man is facing charges after being arrested in connection with a robbery involving the theft of firearms. 19-year old Johnathon Strobel is facing two felony charges including aiding and abetting an aggravated robbery and a dangerous weapon charge. On November 21st police were called to an apartment where a robbery had occurred. The victim told police that three men and two women had been in his apartment where they later attacked him and stole seven long-gun firearms. The complaint said the victim was attacked by the two women and a man. The report says the victim had a bag placed over his head and was forced onto the couch. The victim said the attackers attempted to tie him up, but he resisted and was able to remove the bag. The victim said he was then punched by a man who would later be identified as Strobel. During the robbery, the victim saw a man removing seven firearms from the home. The victim also said that seven rolls of quarters had been stolen. In photo lineups, the victim identified Strobel as the man who punched him. After Strobel was arrested Tuesday, he acknowledged his involvement in the robbery and identified others involved. Strobel is being held in the Stearns County Jail. According to a news release from the St. Cloud Police Department, the incident is still under investigation.

–A house sustained severe damage Friday night from a fire in Richmond. Firefighters were called around 6:30pm to County Road 9 in Munson Township to a home owned by Josh Brown. Brown said he arrived home to find the home full of smoke. No injuries were reported, and no cause has been determined. The house fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshall’s Office. The home was ruled unlivable at the time due to the fire.

–A Crookston man was given prison time for first-degree burglary and assaulting a police officer. 46-year old Todd Scott Olslund of Crookston was ordered to serve two years and nine months in prison Monday after he pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree burglary and one count of fourth-degree assault in Polk County District Court.

All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four sunk. 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. The following day the U.S. entered World War II.
