--Authorities were surveying reports of damage Friday night after storms in Central Minnesota prompted sirens to go off in area cities. Officials received reports of funnel clouds and what appeared to be tornado activity about 5:30pm about midway through Stearns County. The storm was moving to the west through the county, and their public safety department went out to monitor the situation with reports of rotation from Richmond, Cold Spring, Rockville, Freeport, Avon, Collegeville, St. Joseph, Waite Park, Sartell and St. Cloud. Authorities are looking at damage and will submit their findings to the National Weather Service, which will determine if a tornado occurred.
There was a report of damage to a turkey barn in Spring Hill Township on County Road 12. Officials are working with the St. Martin Fire Department to determine what happened. Some people were questioning why sirens were sounded when there was no tornado warning or watch issued by the National Weather Service. In St. Cloud and surrounding communities the policy for sounding the alarm includes when a funnel cloud that is halfway to the ground is reported by a public safety official and/or a trained weather spotter. Going on that, the decision was made to sound the alarms in all the metro cities.
