NEWS
–Habitat for Humanity of Morrison County invites the public to participate in the dedication ceremony of their sixteenth home in Morrison County on Thursday, April 7th at 5:30pm in Royalton. The address of the home is 149 Prairie View Drive in Royalton. The dedication of the home is a celebration of a community effort built on the foundation of God’s love. Friends, family, and volunteers from all walks of life have helped build this home. Once the home is completed, the family signs mortgage papers and begins making payments to Habitat for Humanity that include taxes and insurance. –Eleven students from Pierz Healy participated in the annual Minnesota Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference in Minneapolis earlier this month. The competitions are designed to prepare students to succeed and assesses real world business skills and problem solving abilities. After qualifying earlier this year, regional winners put their talents to the test during the State Leadership Conference. Students receiving state recognition include: Laura Athman – third in medical office procedures; Alex Stangl – fifth in financial math and analysis concepts and first in administrative support concepts; Candace Stangl – second in administrative support concepts; and Noelle Rueck and Katie Funk – Statesman Torch Award. In May, Laura Athman, Noelle Reuck, Katie Funk, Alex Stangl and Candace Stangl will travel to Boston, Mass., to compete with 5,500 top students from across the United States at the 50th annual National Leadership Conference.

–The Pierz City Council meets tonight 7:00pm at Pierz City Hall. Agenda items include the 2015 Audit presented by Schlenner Wenner and Company. SEH Agreement for Professional Services, electric account update, city picture request, city of Pierz Comprehensive plan, task force appointing, right of way obstruction permit addition and the annual meeting of Representative Assembly.

–Last week, Archbishop Bernard Hebda was named archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Archbishop Hebda has been serving as the apostolic administrator of the archdiocese for the past nine months and will be installed as archbishop on May 13th.

–Shortly after 2:00pm Thursday a house fire occurred on 160th Avenue in Collegeville Township owned by Joseph Rogers of rural Avon. The home was completely engulfed with the roof partially collapsed as authorities arrived. No one was home at the time of the fire. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause. Firefighters were on the scene for three hours. The home was a total loss.

–A small grass fire ignited on Highway 210 and Scenic Road in Baxter Wednesday night that burned around a 20-40 foot path. Firefighters worked through the evening to make sure the fire was competely out. This is a reminder that with dry grass and little snow cover in central Minnesota the spring wildfire season is starting earlier and already dozens of grass and wildfires have been reported in the Brainerd Lakes and central Minnesota regions. Spring burning restrictions are in effect for Morrison, Crow Wing, Stearns, Benton, Wright and others. Northern Minnesota counties like northern Cass, Wadena, Hubbard, Becker, Itasca and more start today.

–Around 4:00pm Thursday local authorities conducted a drug enforcement operation by the Holiday Gas Station on the east side of Little Falls. Two adult females were arrested for 1st Degree Sales and 2nd Degree Possession of Methamphetamine. 30-year old Jamie Tapia-Morrow of Brooklyn Park was arrested after allegedly selling a large quantity of meth and several prescription drugs to an individual in Little Falls. Also arrested was 28-year old Sara Harrison of Minneapolis who was in the vehicle with Tapia-Morrow and found to be in possession of approximatley 14 grams of methamphetamine. Five children under the age of 18 were also present in the vehicle with the suspects. Law enforcement officers discovered during this operation the adults were using the children to help in the sale of drugs. All five children were placed in protective custody. Tapia-Morrow and Harrison are being held at the Morrison County Jail pending formal charges of drug sales, possession and child endangerment. The Central MN Violent Offender Task Force was assisted by the MN BCA, Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force, Morrison County Sheriff’s Office and the Little Falls Police Department.

–A seasonal cabin was lost to fire Thursday morning in Cross Lake. Around 6:00am, firefighters were called to County Road 6 on the north side of Cross Lake in Crow Wing County and found the one story A-frame residence fully engulfed in flames. No one was at the cabin at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

–Complaints from neighbors about suspected drug dealing at a southeast St. Cloud residence led to a search Thursday by the Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force and the discovery of prescription drugs and methamphetamine. The search was at 1021 15th Avenue SE and led to the arrest of one woman. The renter of the residence, 46-year old Laurie Olson of St. Cloud could face charges of fifth-degree felony possession of a controlled substance. Three other women at the residence when the search warrant was executed will not be charged. The St. Cloud Police Department SWAT team assisted in executing the warrant. The task force was also assisted by the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office.

–Actor Gary Shandling died Thursday at age 66. Heis best known for his years on the Larry Sanders show on HBO but began his writing career in the 1970s for Sanford and Son and Welcome Back Kotter.

NCAA= Villanova, Oklahoma, Syracuse and North Carolina advanced to the men’s final four. North Carolina only top seed to Final Four.
HK= Ferris State beat St. Cloud State 5-4 in overtime Saturday ending Huskies season. North Dakota won both games and advanced to the Frozen Four on April 7th. UMD won one and lost one.
