NEWS
–The Minnesota Department of Health removed St. Cloud Hospital from “immediate jeopardy” status at 11:00am Friday. The department accepted action steps taken in recent days by the organization and moved the hospital to “condition-level noncompliance” as a participant in the federal Medicare program. The hospital was under review after a fatal shooting last month. The review determined the hospital did not comply with Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services requirements, placing its residents in danger. The hospital was placed in “immediate jeopardy” status. That means the the hospital’s “noncompliance … caused, or is likely to cause, serious injury, harm, impairment, or death to a resident,”. However they were removed from immediate jeopardy status Friday.

–The House Education Innovation Policy Committee and the Education Finance Committee held a joint hearing Thursday. Back in 2011 and again in 2015, lawmakers passed a series of reforms, to have the Minnesota Board of Teaching eliminate some of the bureaucracy that faces prospective teachers who are seeking a Minnesota teaching license. School superintendents testified that many teachers from other states – who had moved to Minnesota in the hope of teaching here – are being denied license by the Board of Teaching – and are given no explanation by the board. District 9B Representative Kresha who serves as Vice-Chair of the Education Finance Committee says  that many schools are facing a teacher shortage. He adds if a qualified teacher from a neighboring state comes to Minnesota and wants to teach here, he or she should not be denied a license for no good reason. The 2001 and 2015 legislation instructed the MN Board of Teaching to handle such cases in a more fair and transparent manner; Rep. Kresha says the Board of Teaching has failed to do that.
