NEWS
--Staff Sergeant Anthony Housey appeared on KLTF Party Line Friday and spoke about the cleanup from the storms at Camp Ripley. The storm that struck around 10:30pm on Wednesday September 7th was an EF-1 Tornado and damaged a number of facilities. The clean up went well and only a few units had to rearrange training schedules due to pickup and debris. Estimated damage amounts are around 15-25 million dollars for Camp Ripley and around 2-3 million more for the Minnesota Power solar field. The buildings will likely take 6-9 months before they can be livable again and meet all the structural inspections. Housey was unclear how much time would be needed before the solar field would be able to be unveiled again. They were scheduling an unveiling just days before the storm hit. Minnesota Power is aiming for next spring. The big thing from the storm was that with over 100 people on base, no one was injured. In another topic, Sgt. Housey mentioned that the Court of Honor Memorialization which began in 1933 will be coming up again in early October. This year Camp Ripley will be honoring the 19 members of the Minnesota National Guard soliders that have died in the line of duty. Since 1933, over 400 inductees had been added to the court of honor which is around the Military Museum site of Camp Ripley.

--St. Cloud school board unanimously approved Thursday financing for the $17 million early childhood education and community education building near Discovery School in Waite Park. The district will pay for the project by selling $17 million in certificates of participation, which are like bonds. Approximately $15.63 million will be repaid by levying taxpayers, and the remaining $1.37 million will be paid for with the district's community education fund. Despite the increase in the lease levy, there won't be a net increase in taxes for school district residents because the district is reducing its long-term facilities levy, which covers the cost of replacing equipment such as boilers. St. Cloud school board also approved the preliminary 2017 levy Thursday. The estimated amount is $23.98 million, a decrease of about $2 million from last year's levy.
