–The Little Falls Exchange Club announced that their 2016 Book of Golden Deeds award winner is Thor Lindquist. Lindquist will receive his golden deeds award on March 17th at the Falls Ballroom at 7:00pm. Persons interested in celebrating the award with Thor should contact Eric Betlock for tickets at 632-5137 by March 10th.
–Icy roads Tuesday sent seven people to the hospital due to accidents in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Around 7:20am a crash involving six vehicles occurred on Highway 210 near Deerwood. Injured with non life threatening injuries were 37-year-old Erin Riedemann of Crosby, 73-year-old Kenneth Denzer of Deer River and 36-year-old Ted E. Riedemann of Crosby. The three other drivers were not hurt. The second crash occurred around 7:30am on Highway 210 near the Brainerd Airport where all four drivers were hurt. 29-year-old Rebecca Ridlon of Ironton, 49-year-old Kristine Booth of Baxter, 35-year-old Alicia Brown of Crosby and 27-year-old Garrett S. Tetrick of Aitkin were all treated and released for their injuries. Sgt. Neil Dickenson of the Minnesota State Patrol stated that Tuesday morning in the lakes area between 4-8am there were 13 vehicles in the ditch, eight property damage accidents and the two injury accidents.
–Several communities will see their Catholic parishes reorganized, after a plan was announced to parishioners earlier this week. Starting in July, parishes in northeastern Stearns County and southern Morrison County will form three clusters. The parishes had previously been organized in two clusters and one individual parish. The two current clusters are Holdingford, Opole, St. Anna and St. Wendel. While the other cluster consisted of Bowlus, Elmdale, Upsala and St. Francis. St. Stephen is currently a stand-alone parish and its priest, Reverend Robert Harren will retire July 1. The new arrangement will feature three clusters of three parishes each: One cluster of Holdingford, St. Anna and Bowlus, another featuring Elmdale, Upsala and St. Francis. The final cluster of St. Stephen, St. Wendel and Opole. The plan is for one priest to serve each cluster. The pastors who will serve the new clusters have not been chosen.
–A construction accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Lyon County Courthouse. A portion of the courthouse addition’s south wall fell on a construction worker on the first level of the addition to the courthouse shortly after 1:00pm Tuesday. The incident is under investigation. Stairs were being installed near the south wall at the time of the accident. The injured worker was subcontracted by CGI of Little Falls the lead contractor of the project. The construction worker was extracted about one-half hour after emergency personnel arrived at the scene. The man suffered significant head trauma, a broken wrist and a severe leg injury caused by a puncture with a piece of rebar. He was transported by ambulance to the Avera Regional Medical Center and was later airlifted to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The man’s identity and condition has not been released. The projected $9 million-plus project began in July 2015. It is expected to be complete by December.
–Minnesota State Senator Carrie Ruud of Breezy Point announced Tuesday she will run again in District 10 which represents Aitkin and Crow Wing County. Ruud is currently in her 2nd term as a state senator where she was first elected to the seat in 2008.
–Caucuses will be held in Morrison County on Tuesday. Morrison County DFL will hold their precinct caucuses Tuesday, at the Little Falls Community Middle School. Registration begins at 6:30pm and the caucus convenes at 7:00pm. Republican caucus attendees will meet at 7:00pm at four locations around Morrison County. Those who live in Belle Prairie Township, Bellevue Township, Green Prairie Township, Little Falls Township, Little Falls Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3, Pike Creek Township, Ripley Township, and Royalton will caucus at the Little Falls Community High School in the commons. Cushing Township, Darling Township, Motley, Motley Township, Parker Township, Randall, Rosing Township, Scandia Valley Township residents will caucus at the Scandia Valley Town Hall in Cushing. Those from Bowlus, Culdrum Township, Elmdale, Elmdale Township, Flensburg, Sobieski, Swan River Township, Swanville, Swanville Township, Two Rivers Township and Upsala will caucus at the media room in the Upsala High School. Those who live in Agram Township, Buckman, Buckman Township, Buh Township, Genola, Granite Township, Harding, Hillman, Hillman Township, Lakin Township, Lastrup, Leigh Township, Morrill Township, Mt. Morris Township, Pierz, Pierz Township, Platte Township, Pulaski Township and Richardson Township will caucus at the Pierz Senior Nutrition Center inside the Pierz City Hall building.
–The deadline for removing fish houses, dark houses and portable shelters from state waterways is 11:59pm on March 7th for shelters south of a line of Highway 200 near Walker to Highway 34 north of Park Rapids. Shelters north of the line have until March 21st. Exceptions are the Minnesota/Canada border lakes March 31st, and the Minnesota/Iowa border lakes February 20th, Minnesota/South and North Dakota border lakes March 5th and Minnesota/Wisconsin Lakes must be removed by March 1st. Question contact Minnesota DNR.
–The board for Melrose Area Public Schools has scheduled a $25.7 million referendum for May 26 to improve school facilities. A two-part question will be on the ballot. The first question asks for $24.9 million in construction costs and $800,000 in bonding costs. The second question would provide additional funding to add a gym with a walking track for increased student and community use. A reminder the Little Falls School District will vote on a two question referendum on Tuesday, May 10th.
