NEWS
–A suspect was arrested in Dakota County in connection to a theft from a Morrison County retailer. Deputies received a call early Wednesday morning regarding a theft at Hilmerson Sports Center, south of Little Falls on U.S. Highway 10. The suspect reportedly damaged the gates of the business at 5:35am, stole a snowmobile, four wheeler and trailer, and left the business shortly after 6:30am. Video surveillance showed the suspect was driving a white Chevy truck. Tire tracks indicate the vehicle then traveled east on Iris Road. Captain Pat Enderlein of the Dakota County Sheriff’s Department said Joshua Barron was arrested Wednesday afternoon and is facing possible charges of possession of a stolen vehicle in the case.
–Super Bowl 50 is this Sunday between Carolina and Denver. The NFL is honoring over 3,000 players and coaches along with 2,000 high schools as members of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll community. Little Falls Community High School is amongst those being honored for a former graduate, Gale Gillingham who was a member of the Green Bay Packers in the first two Super Bowls. As a member of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll, the Little Falls Community Schools received a commemorative Golden Football, an NFL character education curriculum and is elgible to apply for a grant from the NFL foundation to support their school’s football program.
–The Winter Warrior Sled Dog Race will be held on Camp Ripley next weekend February 12th-14th. This will be the third sled dog event held on Camp Ripley by the North Star Sled Dog Club. Race events will begin at 9:00am Friday with the sprint teams, consisting of teams of two, four, six, or 10 dogs and which will take to trails of 3-10 miles. On Saturday, the mid-distance teams start the day with teams of six or 10 dogs, traveling on trails of 25-45 miles. While the distance teams are on the trails, anticipating a finish around 2:30pm, sprint and skijor races will be going on throughout the day. Mushers will be competing for a purse of over $3,000. –An Upsala math teacher, Jessica Hovland is one of 114 candidates for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. A 25-member panel will pare the list to semifinalists and finalists before the 52nd Minnesota Teacher of the Year will be announced May 15th at the Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington. Candidates had to accept their nominations and complete required materials to be eligible for the honor, organized by Education Minnesota.
–The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating several fish house burglaries on Little Rock Lake. Around 2:45pm on Monday the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received the report of an attempted burglary of a fish house on Little Rock Lake. The responding deputy found that someone had attempted to pry open the complaint’s fish house door. The deputy also found that 5 other fish houses in the same area had been damaged or opened by the suspect(s). It is believed the burglaries occurred sometime over night from Sunday to Monday. Deputies continue to investigate these crimes, and at this time no property has been reported stolen. The Benton County Sheriffs Office strongly encourages people to bring all items of value with them when they leave their fish houses to keep from falling victim to these criminals. Anyone with information about this crime or the suspects is asked to contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
–A reminder that the public ceremony for the U.S. Coast Guard portrait, the third portrait painted by Charles Kapsner for the State Veterans Cemetery north of Litte Falls will be Saturday at 2:00pm. Kapsner and other dignitaries will be on hand to visit on the project.
–The Minnesota State Patrol reports hundreds of crashes statewide as a winter storm pushed across the state. As of early Wednesday over 400 crashes and 350 spinouts were reported on state highways. The Minnesota Department of Transportation was advising no travel in the southwestern part of the state through Wednesday morning because of blizzard conditions and near zero visibility. The National Weather Service says 10.5 inches of snow had fallen on Lakeville in the southern Twin Cities by Tuesday evening. Other snowfall reports include 10 inches in Madelia, 9 inches in Rosemount and 8.5 inches in New Ulm. Only around one inch fell at the Little Falls Radio station.
–Officers used a stun gun Monday to subdue a man who was resisting arrest. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office reported 26-year old Christopher Myrhe was making a court appearance on a fourth-degree assault charge, where he appeared to be under the influence. After being ordered to be tested for intoxication, Myhre became belligerent and refused to comply and began to physically resist arrest. A stun gun was eventually deployed to subdue Myrhe. Myrhe was taken to the Stearns County Jail where officers found medication that he did not have a prescription for. Myrhe is facing charges of fifth-degree controlled substance, disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process.
–Congratulations to Little Falls, Brainerd and Alexandria High School for being the top three teams to advance to the sectionals in the North Subsection 8AA One Act Play performances. Brainerd finished first with their play “Booby Trap” about an American solider who sat against a tree stump in the combat zone and accidentally sits on a landmine. Little Falls finished in the top three to advance to sectionals with their performance of “The Amish Project” by Jessica Dickey which is a fictional story on the 2006 Nickel Mines schoolhouse shooting that occurred in an Amish community. This was Little Falls’s first year in the north subsection. They had been in the south subsection past years. Little Falls, Brainerd, Alexandria, Sauk Rapids, Sartell and Becker will compete at Sections in One Act Play with a chance to compete at the state tournament later this month.
–A Brainerd man was injured and a horse killed after a crash Monday around 4:35am on Crow Wing County Road 8 near Brainerd. 51-year-old Joel Fletcher was traveling on the county road when he struck a horse in the roadway. Fletcher was taken to the Brainerd hospital and treated for injuries that were not serious. The horse died on scene.
