–The Upsala Area School student council is sponsoring a Mock Crash on Thursday, May 19. With help from community agencies including the volunteer fire department, EMS, and local law enforcement from Morrison County and the State of Minnesota, the students will be able to see what really happens at the sight of a crash. The mock crash will begin at the school at 8:30am and will continue two blocks south of the school at the bus garage. Sirens from police, ambulance and fire trucks may be heard. Weather permitting there may even be a life link helicopter. Please be aware that this is just a drill to show students the importance of seat belt use and some of the consequences of distracted driving and underage drinking.

–McGregor residents and anglers are hosting the Governor’s Fishing Opener on Big Sandy Lake this weekend. Governor Mark Dayton and Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith will be on hand to kick off the fishing season. Governor Dayton will be joined by Bob Staska who is the principal of McGregor High School and current head football coach. Little Falls Radio’s Al Windsperger will be live with interviews and reports from the Governor Fishing Opener on Friday 5-9am during the morning on Q92 WYRQ before heading out on Saturday.

–Three people were injured Monday night around 10:15pm in a two vehicle accident in Mille Lacs County. 17-year-old Levi Jeska of Isle was north on Highway 27 near County Road 47 when the vehicle struck 54-year-old Scott Robb of Isle at the intersection. Both drivers along with Jeska’s passenger, 17-year-old Dylan Hardy of Isle all sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

–A small cooking fire damaged a St. Cloud apartment Tuesday morning. The St. Cloud Fire Department were called to an apartment in the East Haven Halfway House located at 1425 East St. Germain St. around 10:30am Tuesday. The fire was put out by the unit’s occupants. No one was injured. Crews cleared the scene within an hour. The damage estimate to the apartment was around $3,000.

–This Sunday Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Little Falls will be holding a Mass for all members of law enforcement, firefighters, emergency personnel, first responders along with all members of the military either past Veterans or active military personnel. This Mass will be Sunday at 10:30am where all of the above will be thanked.

–Two Central Minnesotans were killed in a collision Friday night in the U.S. Virgin Islands. 44-year old Edwin Miles Thornbury of Sauk Rapids and 25-year-old Hannah Ruth Peterson of St. Cloud died of injuries sustained in a collision. Thornbury and Peterson were traveling on a motorbike when they were rear-ended by a vehicle. Thornbury died at the scene. Peterson was taken to a hospital but later died from her injuries.

–Three people were injured in a three-vehicle collision west of Cold Spring Wednesday. The Minnesota State Patrol said troopers responded to the incident near the intersection of Minnesota Highway 23 and Stearns County Road 158 just before 8:00am Wednesday. 42-year old Nancy Schlangen of Paynesville was traveling east on Highway 23 when she entered the median to head north on County Road 158. As Schlangen was attempting to cross the westbound lane of Highway 23 her vehicle collided with a vehicle driven by 50-year old Nicholas Newton of Somerset, Wisconsin. Both vehicles left the roadway and hit a semitailer in the southbound lane of County Road 158. Schlangen, Newton and Newton’s passenger, 31-year-old Dustin Cooper, received non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi, 45-year-old Glen Schuller of St. Joseph was not injured.

–The Minnesota walleye fishing opener will bring out anglers from around the state this weekend and the Minnesota Department of Transportation is urging travelers to plan ahead and use extra care while driving through highway work zones. Motorists may encounter bypasses, lane closures and detours resulting from the hundreds of transportation projects that are underway this construction season. MnDOT recommends that motorists think about alternate routes, call 5-1-1 or go to www.511mn.org to get advance information about road construction and detours, and be prepared for slower traffic.

NATIONAL NEWS
–The Internal Revenue Service yesterday reminded tax-exempt
organizations that many have a filing deadline for Form 990-series information returns in with the May 16th filing deadline facing many tax-exempt organizations. The IRS cautioned these groups not to include Social Security numbers or other unneeded personal information on their Forms 990, and consider taking advantage of the speed and convenience of electronic filing. Because May 15th falls on a Sunday, the deadline this year moves to Monday, May 16.

SPORTS
TWINS= Twins get swept by Baltimore losing 9-2 on Wednesday. Twins have today off and are at Cleveland Friday.
NFL= The NFL has announced that the Super Bowl in 2018 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis is set for February 4th, 2018.
GOPHER= The University of Minnesota has announced that Mark Coyle is is to be named as the college’s new athletic director. Coyle is the current AD at Syracuse University. He was an associate director of athletics at the U of M from 2001-2005.
