–One man was injured Sunday night in a shooting in Avon Township of Stearns County. The shooting happened at about 8:00pm in the 18000 block of 332nd Street. A 43-year-old St. Cloud man was shot at least twice and was taken by air ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. A 38-year-old Avon man was listed in a report at the residence at the time, but the press release did not say how the Avon man was involved. The incident is in an open and ongoing investigation. More information is expected to be released in due time.
–The Little Falls Community Schools referendum is up for vote on Tuesday, May 10th. Today there are several opportunities for property owners to learn of their specific tax impact if both or the first part of the referendum pass. Andrea Uhl, a financial specialist at Ehlers will be at Kim’s on Pacific in Randall from 10:30am-12:00pm; High School Commons from 1:00-3:00pm; and at Perkins in Little Falls from 3:30-5:30pm. If you wish to attend any of these spots to find out your individual tax burden, bring your property tax statement or property ID. There is also a referendum presentation led by Little Falls Community Schools Superintendant Stephen Jones from 7:00-9:00pm tonight in the High School Commons.
–This is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. This is the perfect time for families, communities, schools, and local businesses to review and talk about their emergency plans and how they can prepare for the upcoming severe weather season. On Thursday the National Weather Service will issue test tornado warnings at 1:45pm and again at 6:55pm. Outdoor warning sirens will activate at these times in many counties including Morrison County who will participate. In the event of actual severe weather, the tests will be postponed until the following day at the same times. Each day will have a specific topic to focus on. Yesterday was alerts and warnings with today covering severe weather, lightning and hail. Wednesday will focus on floods, Thursday tornadoes (with statewide tornado drills) and Friday extreme heat.
–Local residents, motorists and others near the Lake Wobegon Trail and several state highways in Morrison, Stearns, Crow Wing and Isanti counties may see smoke from roadside prescribed fires beginning today through June 15th. The burns are planned in the following three locations: Highway 371 between Little Falls and Baxter; Lake Wobegon Trail between Osakis and Sauk Centre; Highway 23 near Richmond and Cold Spring; Highway 65 between East Bethel and Grady. Traffic should not be affected and all roadways and trails will remain open. The prescribed fires are controlled by trained crews and conducted within MnDOT rights of way during optimal weather conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness. The fires are used to improve native vegetation and weed control. –A bicyclist was injured Saturday after not yielding to a vehicle in St. Cloud. Authorities responded around 1:15pm to the 500 block of 1st Street where a bicycle had crashed with a vehicle while crossing an intersection. The man on the bike, 63-year old James Allen Wiegel of St. Cloud was taken to the hospital for non life threatening injuries. Wiegel was also cited for a failure to yield right of way.
–Monday afternoon, the Minnesota House voted 73-56 in favor of HF1089 – a bill that would no longer make certain fireworks illegal in Minnesota. District 11B State Representative Jason Rarick of Pine County is chief author of the bill. This bill expands the list of legal consumer fireworks to include aerial and audible devices; changes the license fee process for consumer fireworks, limits regulations imposed on the sale of sparkling devices and novelties and permits local units of government to prevent the sale and use of aerial and audible devices. Rarick says many Minnesotans cross over in to neighboring states to purchase fireworks. By making fireworks legal, Minnesota could stand to gain $5 million annually in sales taxes.
–A Stearns County judge has convicted the former owner of the The iPod Guy store in St. Cloud of criminal sexual conduct for fathering a child with a 15-year-old girl. 46-year old Andrew James Frederick was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Frederick is scheduled to stand trial Tuesday on a drug possession charge that accuses him of having numerous prescription painkillers at his business when investigators used a search warrant to search it. They searched his business after a confidential informant bought painkillers from Frederick at the store. It was during that search that police found Frederick in a back bedroom with the then-16-year-old girl and their daughter.
–U.S. 8th District Congressman Representative Rick Nolan on Saturday announced he would vote for Bernie Sanders at the Democratic National Convention this summer. Nolan is a “superdelegate,” or delegate to the national convention who is not bound by party rules to vote for whichever candidate won the state’s presidential preference poll. Nolan is running for reelection this fall against challenger Stuart Mills III.
