NEWS --Today is the final day for filing of offices such as city council, school board, townships and other election which do not hold primary elections. All filings must be submitted by 5:00pm this evening. Yesterday, the former mayor of Little Falls Catherine Van Risseghem filed for the ward two seat on the Little Falls City Council. Ward two represents the northeast side of Little Falls. The incumbent Gerald Knafla has also filed for this race. The General Election for all races will be held Tuesday, November 8th.
--The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reports that around 8:50pm Saturday night, the sheriff's office received a call stating a man had fallen off of an RV. 21 year old Joshua Thaemlitz of Lakefield was standing on top of the RV when he fell to the ground, knocking him unconscious. He was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital with unknown injuries. The Morrison County Sheriff's office was assisted by Pierz police and firefighters.
--The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday responded to a 28-year-old man who was injured while tubing on Lake Alexander. According to the Sheriff’s Office Cole Johnson of Eden Prairie was riding in a tube being pulled behind a boat driven by friends around 3:30pm when he fell off the tube and hit his head on the water. Johnson was knocked unconscious for a short period of time. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance with unknown injuries. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Scandia Valley first responders. Johnson was wearing a floatation device at the time of the accident.
--Bear have been spotted around the area and a reminder from the DNR to make sure no garbage is left unattended or in open containers outside and if you have campfires make sure all food items are placed away and left out at night as bear will surface in areas where food and garbage is left outside. Bear were recently reported in Little Falls and three seperate reports in the Baxter area over the past week. More reports also in Cass and Hubbard counties.
--A Sauk Rapids man was injured Sunday afternoon just before 2:00pm in an accident near Becker in Sherburne County. 54-year-old Jerome Carlson was on Highway 10 on his motorcycle when a pickup turned in front of the cycle causing the two to collide. Carlson was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with multiple non life threatening injuries. The driver and passenger in the pickup truck were not injured.
--A Brainerd woman was injured Saturday morning near Aitkin. The State Patrol said 78-year-old Bonieta Albrecht was traveling on Highway 210 near 440th Place when a vehicle turned into a driveway driven by 87-year-old Raymond Neuttila of Chisholm. Albrecht was taken to the Aitkin hospital for treatment of injuries. According to the State Patrol Nuettila and his passenger had no apparent injuries.
--Another accident with motorcycles occurred Sunday night around 7:30pm in Fairhaven Township of Stearns County. Four motorcycles were traveling east on County Road 146. One motorcyclist 54-year-old John Chance II of Cold Spring struck the shoulder of the road that caused him to lose control of the cycle. This caused Chance to strike another motorcycle driven by 25-year-old Justin Herberg of Paynesville. Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries. The Sheriff's Office said the accident did not involve any of the other motorcyclists in their group.
--An Onamia man is jailed now after an accident near Grand Casino Mille Lacs on Friday night. 59-year-old Kenneth Mitchell was driving a vehicle that struck a vehicle pulling a boat trailer. Two passengers in the larger vehicle had minor injuries. Mitchell was found to have consumed alcohol and tested over the legal limit. Mitchell was arrested on charges of felony criminal vehicular operation.
--Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl announced that two level 3 Predatory Offenders will be moving to the area. 52-year old Christopher Roehl will be moving to a residence on Estate Circle Drive in rural south Brainerd. Also 32-year old Brandon Keith Churchill will be moving into a residence located in the area of County Road 3 and Birchem Circle in the Merrifield area. In both cases Sheriff Todd Dahl reports that the offenders have lived at these residences in the past so there will be no Community Notification meetings.
--Gas prices have inched up a bit in Minnesota in the past few weeks but nothing compared to the last three years in August. Average retail gasoline prices have jumped 6.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.14 per gallon Sunday. This compares with the national average that has not moved at all, staying at $2.12 per gallon. It could be a lot worse: Prices yesterday were 59.5 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago, but 1.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. Look at it this way August 15 last year gas was $2.73, in 2014 it was $3.35, 2013 it was $3.43, 2012 it was $3.70 and in 2011 it was $3.55 a gallon.
