NEWS
--A 30-year-old Brainerd man died early Monday morning in a head-on, two-vehicle collision on Highway 210 near Crow Wing County Road 59 in Ironton. The man killed was identified as 30-year old Richard D. Van Horn. The state patrol and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office responded to the fatality at 1:40am. It was reported Van Horn was driving a truck westbound on Highway 210 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a semitrailer pulling a utility trailer. The truck went into the ditch and rolled. The driver of the semitrailer, 58-year old Richard J. Poole of Superior, Wisconsin was transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd for non-life threatening injuries.

--A 47-year-old man was found Monday morning by law enforcement divers after a boat capsized Sunday afternoon on Lake Sylvia in Melrose Township. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office identified the man who died as 47-year old Dale Urban Steinemann of Meire Grove. The sheriff's office received a report at about 2:15pm of an overturned boat on the lake. The caller reported she and other witnesses heard the sound of a boat motor clearing the water. When they looked out onto the lake, they saw a speed boat on its side and an occupant thrown from the boat. The boat capsized, and the witnesses pulled two boys, ages 10 and 7, from the water. Both were wearing life jackets. The boys were children of Steinemann's girlfriend. Neither of the boys were injured. The Melrose Rescue Squad and Stearns County deputies searched the lake with watercraft and divers until dark without success. The search resumed Monday with the assistance of the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Dive Team and its sonar unit. Steinemann's body is being sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiners' Office for an autopsy.

--A Pierz woman was involved in a two vehicle collision Sunday that injured the other driver. A motorcycle driven by 57-year old James J. Kraemer of Glencoe, was traveling north on Minnesota Highway 15 near 18th Street North in Sauk Rapids as the cycle rear-ended a vehicle driven by 59-year old Yvonne Kisor of Pierz. According to the Minnesota State Patrol James Kraemer suffered non life threatening injuries while his passenger and Kisor had no apparent injuries.

--Invasive zebra mussels are present in Round Lake in Mille Lacs County according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Zebra mussels were reported earlier this summer in the same regions of the lake in Crow Wing and Aitkin County. Two other lakes reported zebra mussels present which were Detroit Lake in Becker County and Signalness Lake in Pope County. Less than 2% of the Minnesota 11,842 confrimed lakes have been infested with zebra mussels.

--The Morrison County Commissioners meet this morning at 9:00am at the Morrison County Government Center.

--Pierz Oktoberfest week has begun with the medallion hunt kicking off yesterday and clues read daily on Little Falls Radio, the Wacky Hacker Golf Tournament with Horizon Health is Friday at 10am, Friday and Saturday night 7pm Pierz Community Theater production of Annie will be performed at the PAC, Saturday the 1K and 5K run for hospice will be at 8:30am at the high school, Free classic rock concert 8pm at the church parking lot. Sunday the parade at 11am with this year the grand marshal being football coach Leo Pohlkamp. Take the shuttle buses from around town to and from the park with many events running Sunday from 12:30-5pm.

--The Brainerd Police Department is trying to locate 57-year old Becky Simonds to check her welfare. Becky was last seen yesterday at the Americas Best Value Inn Brainerd. Please contact the Police Department if you have any information at (218) 829-2805.

--The USA Community Chorus and Camp Ripley will host a three-day choral music retreat on the post October 14th-16th. The principal teaching artist for this retreat will be Dr. Craig D. Jessop, Dean, Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University and the former director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. More than 300 area singers are expected to participate in the retreat which has a patriotic/military music theme. There will be two concerts during the three-day retreat. The first, on Saturday evening at 7:30pm will be in the Vessey Recreation Center on the post. The second will be a non-denominational service in the post chapel on Sunday at 10:30am. Both concerts are free but due to limited seating in the chapel, a ticket will be necessary for admission to that event. The retreat will also feature a master class on Friday conducted by Dr. Jessop which carries two hours of continuing education credits for high school music directors at no charge. Singers who wish to participate in the retreat must register by September 23rd.

--A head on collision early Monday on I-35 in St. Louis County injured the two drivers. Around 3:40am 20-year old Aaron Lundgren of Baxter was travelling south in the northbound lanes when his car struck a vehicle driven by Emma Kaufmann. The report from the Minnesota State Patrol did not include an age or hometown of Kaufmann. Both drivers sustained non life threatening injuries.

CLASS C STATE TOURNAMENT= After Sobieski, Fort Ripley and Lastrup all won last weekend they each play this coming weekend. On Saturday Nisswa faces Minnesota Lake at 11:00am on AM960 KLTF while Sobieski plays Ortonville on Saturday at 11:00am on 94.1FM (FM94). Sunday Lastrup has Hampton at 1:30pm and Fort Ripley plays Hutchinson at 7:30pm. Both games on AM960 KLTF.
