NEWS
–U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota is already one of the top 10 names floating around as a possible replacement for the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The longest serving justice of the current court died Saturday of an apparant heart attack. President Barack Obama said he will appoint a nominee in due time but leaders of the Republican-controlled Senate say Obama’s successor should be in charge of filling the seat. New media outlets by late Sunday had released a number of possible candidates for the vacancy and most lists had Senator Klobuchar who is a former prosecutor and currently serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

–A 32-year-old from Little Falls was involved in a one-vehicle accident Sunday night around 11:20pm on Highway 27 and Stevens Road in Mille Lacs County. Maricar Ericson of Little Falls was traveling on Higway 27 west of Wakhon when the vehicle slid off the road and rolled over. Ericson had no apparent injuries from the accident.

–Stearns County reported a courtroom incident Friday. Officers were ordered to escort 32-year-old Gawech Yiek Thach from the St. Cloud Hospital to Stearns County Courthouse. During the hearing Thach was ordered to be returned to the hospital. Officers attempted to escort Thach from the courtroom and he refused. Thach became combative and physically resisted being escorted. An officer deployed a Taser to control Thach. Thach was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to the St. Cloud Hospital to be held for future commitment hearings.

–On March 1st Minnesota will be one of over a dozen states that will hold precinct caucuses (some states have primaries that date) for the major and minor political parties. Precinct caucuses are open to the public, but to be eligible to offer resolutions, vote on party business or become a delegate, participants must be eligible to vote in the fall election, live in the precinct and be in general agreement with the principles of the political party. At the precinct caucuses, members will elect precinct officers, discuss issues and ideas for the party to support, conduct a straw poll for president and elect delegates for the political conventions. To find a precinct caucus location in your area you can click on “2016 Caucus Info” on the elections page through the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

–A 27-year-old from Mendota Heights was injured Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 18 in Crow Wing County. Around 2:40pm, Brian Pagel was westbound on 18 when the vehicle went off the road into the ditch and came to a rest in the trees. Pagel was not seriously hurt.

–Two teenagers were injured Sunday around 6pm on Highway 210 near Ironton. 19-year-old Shelby Hodgman of Emily and 18-year-old Larynn Catlin of Ironton were on 210 when the vehicle left the road due to icy conditions and rolled. Catlin, the driver and the passenger, Hodgman both had non life threatening injuries.

–The State Patrol reported an accident on Higwhay 371 and Birchdale Road in Crow Wing County around 9:30pm Sunday night. The driver and passenger in the pickup truck stated they skidded on a slick patch of road and went into the east ditch. Though an ambulance was dispatched to the scene, no injuries were reported.

–Two people were hurt Sunday near Belgrade in Stearns County. 37-year-old Jacob Oeltjenbruns of New London was on Highway 55 when he missed a deer and the vehicle hit a guard rail and then the bridge deck rail. Oeltjenbruns and his 8 year old daughter Autumn was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

–The Minnesota Twins Winter Caravan made a stop in Little Falls on January 18th. The fundraiser raised $1,008 in ticket sales for the Little Falls Baseball Project. Each Little Falls Radio, Little Falls Hardware Hank, Brandl Motors and the St. Cloud Rox matched that total to bring in over $5,000 towards the project. The prjoect is working towards placing baseball fields at the present Belle Prairie Soccer Fields Complex on the north side of Little Falls.

–A woman was arrested and a man was taken to St. Cloud Hospital after he was stabbed during a domestic assault. The incident happened Saturday night in the 700 block of Eighth Avenue South. A man at that address had a potentially life-threatening stab wound to his leg when officers arrived at about 10:00pm. 42-year old Edward Charles Lawler of St. Cloud was taken to St. Cloud Hospital, where he was treated and stabilized. 35-year old Angela Joy Johnston also was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries she received during the domestic assault. Investigators believe that Lawler had punched Johnson in the face, causing visible injuries. Lawler also physically abused their dogs during the incident. After the initial assault, Johnston stabbed Lawler in the leg as he sat in a chair. Both assaults occurred inside the residence where Lawler and Johnston live. Johnston was taken from the hospital to Stearns County Jail, where she was booked for investigation of first-degree assault. Lawler was also arrested and will be booked at the jail for investigation of felony domestic assault when he’s healthy enough to be released from the hospital. He remained at the hospital early Monday.

–A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Stearns County and several sheriff’s department personnel that was filed after a jail inmate died in 2012 after being subdued with a stun gun. The estate of Jerome Deon Ladette Harrell sued after his February 2012 death. U.S. District Court Judge Richard H. Kyle dismissed the lawsuit in January. The attorney representing the estate earlier this month filed a notice that he intends to appeal the dismissal to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.
