NEWS
–The Little Falls School Board meets at 5pm today at the government center boardroom. The agenda has one item, a resolution for a school referendum. School Superintendent Steven Jones was on KLTF Monday and spoke about what the referendum would entail if adopted by the school board. The referendum is slightly less than a year ago. It is expected to be two questions unlike last years one question ballot. That failed 2,197 no votes to 1,471 yes votes. If all is approved at the meeting tonight the referendum will go to the voters on Tuesday, May 10th. The first date considered was May 3rd but the next day May 4th is the Day of Caring in Little Falls. The board thought a week later would be better for the school and voters.

–Sherburne County District Court Judge Thomas Hayes ruled in favor of an extended juvenile jurisdiction for 17-year old Carlee Bollig of Little Falls Wednesday as the judge decided how to proceed with charges of vehicular homicide facing the teen. The charges are related to a July 31st, 2015 incident in which Bollig allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 10 and County Road 11, striking a vehicle driven by Becker resident Charles Maurer. Maurer was killed in the crash, and his 10-year-old daughter Cassy later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Maurer’s other 16-year old daughter and a 15-year-old friend of the family were also injured in the incident. Bollig was seriously injured in the crash, and the three other passengers of her vehicle were also hurt. This designation would allow a judge to impose a stayed adult prison sentence as well as a juvenile disposition with conditions similar to those of probation. Hayes’ determination came after both attorneys presented cases on whether Bollig’s action did or did not meet the definition of gross negligence. After the ruling, the attorneys agreed that, if while discussion was ongoing, if a resolution could not be reached, a jury trial should be scheduled as soon as possible. Due to the number of witnesses relevant to the case, such a trial could last up to a week.

–The Brainerd Jaycees are hoping that the cold conditions over the past days sticks around through the next weekend so that their fishing extravaganza will go on as scheduled. As of last Friday, the hope of the organization is that the event will still go on January 23rd on Hole in the Day Bay off of Gull Lake near Brainerd for the tournament that gives out $150,000 in donated prizes and brings nearly twice that amount into the area businesses and organizations. The ice as of last week was around 10 inches thick and 15-18 inches is the minimum needed to have the event. The lake will be checked by officials on Friday and a decision will have to be made at that time. There is some talk if the lake is not ready that the tournament could be moved to February 6th. The tournament in 2002 and 2006 had to be canceled due to warm conditions. In 2012 the tournament was moved to another Brainerd area lake. Recent below zero temperatures is a good thing for ice formation on area lakes.

–Brainerd and Nisswa firefighters battled a structure fire Sunday morning on Heron Street in Barrows. The call came in around 7:20am and the trailer house was completely destroyed. It is believed part of the heating system to the structure was to blame. The renter was able to escape thanks to the smoke alarm going off. There were no injuries but the cold conditions did hamper some efforts for the crew.
