NEWS
–A 40-year-old Brainerd man is facing seven charges after a high speed chase with authorities on Highway 371 Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 3:00am when Baxter police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle turning around at a dead end street. The driver failed to stop and turned onto Highland Scenic Avenue making it to Highway 371. The suspect, 40-year-old Torrey Winger continued into Morrison County where he attempted a turn at County Road 49 and slid off the road into a snowbank, then into a ditch. Though Winger reportedly attempted to flee on foot he was apprehended by Baxter Police with assistance from the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office. A search of Winger’s vehicle found him to be in possession of hypodermic needles which tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine. Winger was charged Friday in Crow Wing County District Court with fleeing a peace officer and control substance crime which are felonies along with a number of misdemeanor charges.

–One person was injured in a Stearns County two-vehicle collision Friday night on Minnesota Highway 23. 19-year old Adam Walley of Chaska was traveling west on Highway 23 when Walley turned onto Interstate Highway 94. He failed to yield and was struck by another vehicle traveling east driven by 34-year old Suad Jama of St. Cloud. The report said Walley suffered no apparent injury, while Jama suffered non life threatening injuries.

–A 34-year-old Crosby man faces criminal sexual conduct charges after authorities received a report of sexual assault. Crow Wing County said they got a report from a 16-year-old girl that while she was staying at a friend’s house the friend’s father attempted to sexually assault her. The girl was able to push 34-year-old Ricky Venne off of her. The girl the next morning confronted Venne and Crow Wing County stated that 3 days later the report was filed and Venne was arrested. Venne was charged last week with two counts of 4th degree criminal sexual conduct and informed police that he had agreed to seek help from a mental health counselor.

–Cass County reported stopping a vehicle that led to a drug arrest. Around 2:00pm Thursday the stop was on Highway 210 at Highway 64 north of Motley. A State Trooper saw a vehicle with a broken license plate as the vehicle was speeding and drifting across the fog line. Authorities questioned both 24-year-old Ashley Thomas of Crookston and 38-year-old Billy Vincent of Bemidji. As the Trooper returned to the vehicle after checking their license’s the passenger, Vincent grabbed the shifter of the vehicle putting the car into drive and the driver Thomas accelerated and sped off. The trooper had to first avoid being hit by the car then managed to catch up to them within three miles and forced them out at gunpoint. A search of the vehicle found heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana pipes and Vincent was found to have a large amount of cash on him. After questioning, the two stated they were coming from a trip where they purchased drugs and were bringing them back to Bemidji. The two were taken into custody and formally charged with second degree sale of drugs and also felony possession charges. Thomas was also charged for fleeing a peace officer. Both had prior drug charges.

–The Brainerd fire department responded 12:49pm Friday to a garage fire on Green Gables Road. The fire was mainly under control when firefighters arrived. They made sure there were no rekindling of the flames or smoke within the hour as they left the scene. A vehicle fire was reported on Saturday afternoon around 1:17pm, a snowmobile had started on fire and crews extinguished the fire quickly within the half hour with no injuries at either place.

–Little Falls artist Charles Kapsner is ready to unveil his next portrait which will be the third of five 8-by-10-foot oil paintings to be permanently displayed in the Committal Hall at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. The latest painting, which honors the Coast Guard, will be revealed at 2:00pm on Saturday, February 6th at the cemetery north of Little Falls. The dedication is open to the public. Previous paintings were unveiled in 2011, honoring the U.S. Army, and in 2014, honoring the U.S. Navy. The fourth painting is to honor the U.S. Marine Corps, and the fifth will honor the U.S. Air Force.

–A man is dead and three others were treated for symptoms of possible carbon monoxide poisoning. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a medical emergency at 4:37pm Sunday on Walker Bay on Leech Lake. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputies and emergency personnel arrived and located four men in a camper trailer that had been converted to a fish house. One man was deceased. Another man was transported to St Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids and subsequently transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. The two other men were treated on scene and released. The sheriff’s office reported the initial investigation indicates propane devices used to heat the structure were not ventilated and led to unsafe levels of carbon monoxide inside the trailer. An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office. Identification of the victims are pending notification of family members.

–St. Cloud police and the St. Cloud Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle rollover at 6:41pm Sunday in the 3200 block of Seventh Street North. A vehicle driven by 33-year old Mohamed Mumbarak Abdi of St. Cloud was exiting onto Seventh Street, making a right turn. Abdi told officers there was an oncoming car so he tried to swerve to the right. The vehicle hit a guide wire to an electrical pole, causing the rollover. Abdi was treated for a minor injury. Passengers in Abdi’s vehicle included 30-year old Hibo Mohamed Hassan, 29-year old Omar Fatuma Mohamed, and 34-year old Omar Abshiro Mohamud all from St. Cloud. They all received injuries that were not considered life-threatening by the police department.

–The Minnesota Twins Winter Caravan made a stop Monday morning at Little Falls Hardware Hank. Initial counts are slightly more than 300 were in attendance to see the program and get photographs and pictures taken. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Little Falls Youth Baseball Field and Building Project on the north side of Little Falls. Catch Twins baseball this season on 92.1FM WYRQ.
