NEWS --The Little Falls Community High School Senior Activities Award Banquet was held Monday night. Award winners included- Female Athlete of the Year Kendal Hendrickson and Male Athlete of the Year Tyler Moore; Fine Arts Students of the Year Jessica Eberhardt and Michael Kalpakoff II; US Marine Corp. Distinguished Athlete of the Year Christy Masog and Brett Zawatske; US Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award Angela Meschke and Justin Primus; Vern and Bunny Zehren Award Annie Corbett and Cameron Carl; John Phillip Sousa Award Jordyn Waldoch; Louis Armstrong Award Tyler Moore; Semper Fidelis Musical Excellence Award Alexis Tembreull and Christy Masog; National School Choral Award Natalie Shanoff and Michael Kalpakoff II; Fred Waring Director Award Brandon Yorek; Flyer Swimming Memorial Award Savanna Slettom; MSHSL AAA Award Christy Masog and Tyler Moore; MSHSL ExCEL Award to Juniors Sophia Sowada and Mitchel Schirmers; and there were 10 recipients of three sport athlete awards. Congratulations to each of the students honored.
--The Little Falls Fire Department responded to a utility trailer fire around 4:00pm on Friday. The trailer was at the Mary Kuchinski residence located at 11067 153rd Street in Pike Creek Township. There were some hot ashes on the trailer that started on fire. 15 firefighters were on the scene for a half hour. There were no injuries.
--A boil water order that was issued for Brainerd Public Utilities customers was lifted at 9:00pm last night. Utility workers Sunday evening experienced a drop in water pressure which was a result of a water main south of Brainerd breaking. Crews are expected to fix the line today which means there could be water outages at times during the day. Flushing of the water mains will continue to take place through May 26th so while this done cutomers may notice discoloration of their water. Again the boil water order that was put into effect Sunday evening has been lifted as of late last night. If you have questions call Brianerd Public Utility at (218) 829-2193.
--A woman suspected in a stabbing that was part of a fight among seven people Sunday afternoon in north St. Cloud was arrested late Sunday. 25-year old Shyla Rae Storkamp faces possible charges of first- and second-degree assault. She was one of three females and four males fighting with clubs and sticks about 3:00pm in the 2100 block of Eighth Street North. Storkamp is suspected of stabbing a 24-year-old St. Cloud woman several times in her mouth, nose and left arm. The woman was transported to St. Cloud Hospital with significant injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. The victim hit Storkamp with brass knuckles after being stabbed. Storkamp, who had felony warrants out for her arrest from unrelated incidents, fled the scene. Police believe the seven people met with the intention of fighting. --Beginning yesterday motorists who travel Highway 24 between Clearwater and Clear Lake will encounter daytime delays while the road is reduced to a single. The lane closures will occur between County Road 75 in Clearwater and County Road 8 east of Clearwater, from 7:00am to 5:00pm. The closures will be complete by 5:00pm Thursday. Flaggers will allow one-way, alternating traffic through the daily work zones. The closures are part of the Highway 24 bridge replacement project in Clearwater, and are needed while crews construct temporary lanes to carry traffic later in the project.
--Around 6:20pm Saturday Crow Wing County deputies responded to a disturbance at Tutt’s Bait and Tackle in Garrison. When deputies arrived it was discovered that 2 males had entered the store. 1 male attempted to make a purchase using a counterfeit $100 bill. The owner of the business confronted the male about the counterfeit bill. The male then demanded the bill back stating that he was going to stab him if he didn’t get it back. The business owner then got into a physical confrontation with the male and was able to take the knife away from him and restrain him until deputies arrived. Deputies located numerous other counterfeit bills in the wallet of the suspect who was identified as 31-year old Joshua Donald Strobel of St. Cloud. Strobel is a suspect in other incidents where counterfeit money has been passed in the Garrison area. Strobel was booked into the Crow Wing County Jail on charges of Possessing Counterfeit Money, Giving False Name to Peace Officer, Possession of Marijuana, and Felony Terroristic Threats. Strobel has numerous previous convictions for Criminal Sexual Conduct and Felony Drug Possession. Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl stated the Garrison area has been a Hot Spot for counterfeit bills lately. Numerous people have been identified as being involved with counterfeit bills over the past year. Business owners should carefully check any cash that is received. If they do discover a counterfeit bill, call 911 and report it.
--A St. Cloud man has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for his role in a robbery in which the victims said a stun gun was used. 19-year old Blake Andrew Dearmond previously pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting first-degree aggravated robbery. A man and a woman told police that they were robbed by two men in March 2016 while the victims were walking in south St. Cloud. The victims were approached by two men they didn't know. One man showed a gun and demanded they turn over their personal property. During a short struggle, one suspect pulled a stun gun and used it on the male victim. The suspects fled on foot. Dearmond and 29-year old Brandon Deshawn Wilkes were charged after being arrested blocks from the crime scene. Officers found the stun gun and what turned out to be a replica handgun on the two men. Both pleaded guilty. Dearmond was sentenced Friday to 71 months in prison. Wilkes previously was sentenced to 95 months in prison.
--Pierz native Frank Weber will be releasing an adult fiction novel “Murder Book” on Wednesday at area book stores. Weber is a forensic psychologist who captures professional experiences from his occupation along with personal details of his childhood in the book. Weber has spent his career serving those in need completing assessments for homicide sexual assaults and domestic abuse cases. Weber also received the President's Award for his forensic work.
