–The Crow Wing County Commissioners are expected to vote today on the future of probation services to the county. The board announced back in April to look into whether the county should maintain its partnership with Morrison and Aitkin Counties in probation services or withdraw from it. A heated public meeting last month heard pros and cons from dozens of residents. Crow Wing and Morrison counties have had a partnership since 1974 as one of the first three systems of its kind in the state. Aitkin County joined the group in 1992 forming the existing partnership that is governed by the Community Corrections Act from the Department of Corrections. Legislation passed some years ago does allow counties to fund their own supervision of probation services if they so desire which would be funded by county property tax dollars.

–A number of public fisheries and businesses around Lake Mille Lacs stated recently they are upset after being shut out on talks on what regulations will be done for the upcoming ice fishing season on the lake. Recently the DNR met with American Indian Groups and government officials to make the quota for the upcoming season but apparently did not invite the public to take part. It was a public session last year that led to tribal nations banning netting on the lake for one year after the walleye season ended early due to poor population of fish in the lake. Fisheries and businesses lost work hours and dollars from the sudden stoppage. The DNR said there will be ice fishing on the lake but shortened quotas to make sure that the population was not endangered more and said there would be shorter regulations next year for the summer walleye season. The businesses have petitioned the governor and other legislators to look into this and rework the possible quotas that were put in place.
