NEWS
--Today is election day. In odd number years most races for Governor, Senator, U.S. House and State races are not up for election again until next year. There are city races for some like Mayor in Minneapolis and some city and township elections happening today. It is best to check with your city hall or township official if you need to vote today. The Upsala School board has proposed to renew the $206.54 per pupil portion of the school district’s existing referendum authorization which is scheduled to expire after taxes payable in 2017. The proposed referendum revenue authorization would be applicable for ten years, beginning with taxes payable in 2018. In Holdingford it is a two question ballot. The first question is on a $200 per pupil general education revenue. If ballot question 1 is approved, the Holdingford School board is asking to authorize a general obligation school building bonds in an amount not to exceed $19,690,000 for acquisition, betterment and enhancement of school sites and facilities, including security modifications and long-term maintenance. The Pillager Public School District is asking to authorize a general obligation school building bonds in an amount not to exceed $13,200,000 to provide funds for the acquisition and betterment of school sites and facilities, including the construction and equipping of an auditorium addition and elementary and early childhood classroom additions to the existing school facility, classroom remodeling, and the remodeling, and the completion of exterior improvements and exterior deferred maintenance projects. Other school referendum elections will be held in Wadena-Deer Creek, Onamia and Isle. You can get the list of school bond referendums up for election on the Secretary of State's website.

--Today marks 1 year anniversary of when Terrance “Terry” Brisk was found dead on property in Belle Prairie Township. Brisk's death was ruled a homicide. Brisk's own rifle, believed to be the murder weapon, was recently found by authorities and is being processed by the BCA. There has been no arrests made yet in Brisk's death. The investigation is ongoing and Sheriff Shawn Larson encourages anyone with information on the case to call their office at 632-9233 or to contact Crimestoppers of Minnesota. There is a $30,000 reward being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case.

--John Thomas of Wreaths for the Fallen.org announced that this year will be their biggest ever to lay wreaths on the graves at the State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls next month. With the addition of the new veteran’s cemetery in Preston Minnesota, it will require several hundred additional honor wreaths needed to honor our countries fallen veterans and their families at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemeteries Minnesota this year. This year the date for the National Remembrance Ceremony has been scheduled for December 16th, at 11 am, the third Saturday in December at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemeteries in Little Falls and Preston. Many volunteers from Camp Ripley, the Minnesota Patriot Guard, Minnesota Civil Air Patrol, VFW’s, American Legions, and many other civic organizations along with hundreds of families coming from a wide area will perform the honor of placing the honor wreaths on the grave sites. Due to the limited parking at the cemetery car pooling is recommended. It is suggested everyone plan to arrive by 10am. Everyone is invited to participate in the wreath laying ceremony. --The hunting opener Saturday has already led to at least two reports of accidental shootings. The first was reported Saturday near Tracy in Redwood County. The hunter was wounded in the leg and taken to the hospital for treatment. The other was in Itasca County Saturday. The sheriff's office only reported that the hunter was shot by a stray bullet from a wooded area. No other information was released.

--A 66-year old Remer man was injured Saturday on Highway 200 in Cass County. Arlan Jensen was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 68-year-old Diane Jensen of Remer when the two were hit head on by a vehicle driven by 63-year old Jeff Hallback of Duluth who went through a stop sign. Neither driver was hurt. Jensen was taken to the Park Rapids hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

--Three people were hurt in a crash near Paynesville Friday afternoon. The incident happened shortly before 3:00pm at the intersection of County Road 16 and County Road 33 in Zion Township. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says a pickup pulling a flatbed trailer was heading west on County Road 16 when it failed to stop at the stop sign at County Road 33. The pickup was struck by a car heading south. Both vehicles went into the ditch. The driver of the pickup, 51-year old Danny Heine of Tripoli, Iowa was not hurt in the crash. Heine's two passengers, 34-year old Maaika Hol and seven-month-old Axel Heine were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries. The driver of the car, 45-year old Char Pelz of Paynseville was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

--Waite Park police, the Waite Park School District and other organizations are holding a crosswalk event today from 12:30-2:30pm in front of Discovery Community School on Stearns County Road 137. A crosswalk event occurs when an individual or group of individuals promote pedestrian safety and raise awareness by demonstrating proper use of a crosswalk. A group of volunteers will legally cross the crosswalk following the crosswalk law. The reason is as of November 6th, 34 pedestrian fatalities occurred statewide. Pedestrian fatalities typically increase in the fall with more hours of darkness. Everyone is a pedestrian at some point during the day. Raising awareness, regardless of people’s mode of transportation, will help reduce pedestrian fatalities.

--A 36-year old Bemidji woman was seriously injured Friday when her vehicle left Highway 64 north of Motley in Cass County and rolled several times around 8:15pm. Angela Bellino sustained serious injuries in the accident. Her passengers, ages 11 and 5 were not injured. All were wearing seat belts.
