–A new state law went into effect meaning that schools facing vacancies on their school board must now have special elections for the seats and cannot appoint people to the board. Elections have to be 120 days or more after the vacancy is announced. The state said in previous years around 25 school board members resign each year for a variety of reasons and the old method allowed boards to replace a member with little or no cost. Now the new method means some boards will have vacant seats for up to 4 months after a vacancy and could cost about $10,000 in special election costs, this comes also as many schools still battle to work out other funding through the year.
