--Pierz Healy High School will have homecoming week starting next Monday, September 25th with coronation at 2:45pm. The homecoming football game will be against Eden Valley Watkins on September 29th at 7pm. The top 10 for King and Queen candidates were announced. For Queen they are: Grace Gottwalt, Emily Hedlund, Emma Otremba, Holly Saehr and Kelsi Stuckmayer. For King: Cohlton Boser, Alex Funk, Al Lochner, Jesse Marshik and Preston Rocheleau. --A trailer stolen from a Benton County business was recovered in Morrison County on Friday. Last week on Monday the Benton County Sheriff’s Office took a report of the theft of a black 1994 Towmaster 24-foot flatbed trailer from Burski Excavating of Rice. The trailer was taken from an equipment storage lot in the 5000 block of Highway 10 between the afternoon of September 9th and 10th. On Friday the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received information that this stolen trailer was allegedly at a location in rural Morrison County. A Morrison County deputy conducted an investigation which lead him to an address in Little Falls, where the stolen trailer was found. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42-year old Gerrey Wayne Stevenson of Little Falls for possession of this stolen trailer. Stevenson was transported to the Morrison County Jail and the stolen trailer was returned to its owner. Incidents such as this one highlight the value of timely information in fighting crime. The Benton County and Morrison County Sheriff’s Offices appreciate the efforts of citizens who partner with law enforcement to fight crime and encourage all citizens to report information about crimes and suspicious activity.
--Expect some slowdowns on Highway 10 in the St. Cloud metro area. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says crews will be installing a high-tension cable median barrier along six miles of the highway from County Road 33 south to East St. Germain Street. Segments of the road will be reduced to a single lane from sunrise to sunset, during non-rush hours through October 30th. Cable median barriers can reduce fatalities up to 95 percent.
--Around 7:30pm Sunday a motorcyclist was injured after being forced off the Highway. 26-year old Corey Treb of Baxter was driving a vehicle north on Highway 10 near Rice, and as he changed lanes Treb forced a motorcycle he did not see driven by 32-year old Jesse Boudreau of St. Cloud off the road. As Bourdeau attempted to avoid the vehicle he went into the ditch and suffered life threatening injuries. He was treated at St. Cloud Hospital. Treb was not hurt.
--A Brainerd man was airlifted to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a three vehicle accident near Pillager that backed up Highway 210. Around 4:45pm, 18-year old Kaylee Botts of Pine River was on 210 when she stopped for a left turn and was rear ended by a pickup which then caused the pickup to push into a motorcycle that was on the eastbound lane driven by Shane Derosier of Brainerd. Derosier was airlifted to a Twin Cities Hospital with serious injuries. Botts and her two passengers age 15 and 3 had injuries that were treated at the Brainerd hospital. The pickup driver and his passenger, both from the Verndale area were not injured.
--A reminder that there will be representatives from MNDOT at the Chamber of Commerce office from 9-10:30am today to take questions on the upcoming Highway 27 project through Little Falls in 2019. Anyone with questions about business impact or how residents will be affected is encouraged to come and ask questions.
--The Pillager School District will hold a school district bond referendum vote on November 7th starting at 7:00am in the Pillager School media center. Voters are voting on the issuance for $13.2 million in bonds to build an auditorium addition, add early childhood and elementary school classrooms. Voters in the district who usually vote by mail in ballot for general election will not receive a ballot for the school election and must vote at the school November 7th.
--The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration announced Monday that it has awarded the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe a grant in the amount of nearly $3.3M for the construction of the Leech Lake Veterans Cemetery in Cass Lake, Minnesota. The grant will fund the construction of a main entrance, a combined administration and maintenance facility, roads, an assembly area, a committal shelter, 419 casketed sites, 32 cremains gravesites, 64 columbarium niches, a memorial wall, a memorial walk, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure. The project will develop approximately three acres, and serve 2,959 Tribal Veterans and their families. The closest national cemetery is Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, 224 miles away. The closest state cemetery is Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, 105 miles away. VA's Veterans Cemetery Grants Program is designed to complement VA’s 135 national cemeteries. Since 1980, the program has awarded grants totaling more than $714 million to establish, expand, improve, operate and maintain 107 Veterans cemeteries. These VA-funded Veteran cemeteries provided more than 36,000 burials in 2016.
--The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a house fire Sunday afternoon on Pine Street near the Jaycee Park. There were no visible flames from outside the home, but smoke was seen coming from the windows. Firefighters stated no one was at home at the time. The home was ventilated from the smoke. There was no word on how much damage was done to the inside of the home.
--It was 20 years ago Monday when a series of tornadoes went through central Minnesota, killing one man. About one half dozen twisters, including an "F" Three, caused major destruction in Morrison, Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties. The man who died was hurt when his garage collapsed, and a number of cattle were killed when a barn was destroyed. The largest twister ran for 17 miles until it finally lifted in Onamia.
