NEWS
–The Aitkin woman killed March 29th following a standoff with police has been identified as 50-year-old Denise Fairchild. Fairchild died from a gunshot wound to the torso. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to investigate the shooting that occurred on the 29th around 4:25pm. After 90 minutes of convincing Fairchild to get out of her vehicle she then retrieved a weapon and fired at officers. Officers returned fire and shot Fairchild reportedly three times with the fatal blow in the torso.

–Around 2:25pm on Monday 19-Little Falls firefighters responded to the Adam Janey residence at 509 8th Street NW in Little Falls for smoke in the basement. Firefighters discovered the cause was the water heater element was smoking. Minor smoke damage was done to the house. There were no injuries. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 20 minutes.

–The Brainerd police department is asking for the public’s help for information relating to a vending machine fire Sunday night at the Franklin Art Center. Around 8:15pm firefighters found that someone had used a heating source to burn the plastic off the front of the vending machine likely to steal items. Police were unsure on how many items may have been taken as the items inside the machine had melted with the smoke and heat from the source used. Anyone with information should call 218-829-2805.

–A 59-year-old from Fort Ripley was injured Friday night around 6:50pm in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Baxter. Baxter police said that Anne Benjamin was taken to an area hospital and treated for injuries sustained when her vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by 42-year-old Roger Soderberg of Pillager. Soderberg had an outstanding warrant out for driving after revocation, no insurance, careless driving and failure to transfer title and was arrested.

–Morrison County deputies arrested a 28-year-old man on March 27th after finding two mason jars in a black duffle bag containing marijuana. Deputies made a traffic stop in Motley and after finding the duffle bag with the jars, the man informed deputies that he paid $1,000 for it. He was arrested, no name was given, and is currently awaiting formal charges from Morrison County Attorney’s Office.

–In the past week, Crow Wing County deputies and area fire departments continued to battle grass fires in Nisswa, Ideal Township, Baxter and Pequot Lakes. In all cases the fires no structures damaged or injuries reported. In two cases the fire department stated that the fires were be monitored but got out of hand due to high winds over the weekend. A reminder that burning restrictions remain in place for almost all of northern and central Minnesota. Information on restrictions you are encouraged to contact your DNR Conservation Officer in your region.

–Four acres of grassland and a pole barn burned Monday night in a fire in Manannah Township. Several fire departments and the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire in the the 34300 Block of 617th Avenue after 72-year-old Joseph Scholtes reported his pole barn was on fire around 7:00pm. Scholtes was burning wood in a barrel when the surrounding grass caught fire and spread. Scholtes suffered minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital. The barn and property inside were a total loss.

–The Little Falls High School Activities Banquet is April 25th at 6:30pm at the Falls Ballroom. Tickets are $13 at the office until April 18th.

–Mark Vonder Haar, a 1984 graduate of Little Falls Community High School recently received the Teacher Excellence Award at the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association Conference in Maryland. The Association represents teachers, state supervisors and others who are involved in advancing technology and engineering education in society. Vonder Haar has been teaching technology education for 23 ½ years and is currently teaching videography, graphic communications, architectural drawing and several “Project Lead the Way” classes at Orono High School.

–A Clearwater woman has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for taking out fraudulent loans from the financial services company where she worked. 46-year old Tammy Rose Storms previously pleaded guilty to four counts of theft by swindle. She was sentenced in late March by a Stearns County District Court Judge to 34 months in prison and ordered to pay nearly $153,000 restitution.

–A St. Cloud man faces a felony assault charge after he fought a person whose loud truck had woken him up. 45-year old Justin Ladue was charged Tuesday with one count of third-degree assault and one count of misdemeanor fifth-degree assault.

–A 5-year-old boy who was critically injured after crashing an all-terrain vehicle in west-central Minnesota has died of his injuries. Hennepin County Medical Center spokeswoman Christine Hill says Wesley Needham died Monday. Kandiyohi County sheriff’s officials say the boy took off on the ATV by himself Saturday near Spicer and wasn’t wearing a helmet. The four-wheeler left the road and overturned. The boy was taken to HCMC where he died.

–The Little Falls Community High School and Work Force Center Career Exploration and Job Fair is today from 1-5 at the high school gymnasium. The public is invited to the opportunity to connect with job seekers and high school students by sharing information about a variety of industries, military, law enforcement and Little Falls Radio.

–From Tuesday’s Wisconsin Primary, Bernie Sanders defeated Hillary Clinton on the DFL side, while Ted Cruz was declared the winner for the Republicans over Donald Trump and John Kasich.
