NEWS
–Brainerd officially swore in their new mayor Monday night at their council meeting. Brainerd City Adiministrator Jim Thoreen swore in Ed Menk as the new mayor of Brainerd. Menk when asked after the oath what was next he stated quote “let’s get to work” and the council meeting continued with approving the 2016 budget and capital improvement budget for next year and accepted four tax forfeited parcels from Crow Wing County at the amount of $2,283.

–Brainerd firefighters responded to two calls last Saturday. They were called to the 15000 block of Crow Wing County Road 25 for a vehicle fire. The vehicle was fully engulfed around 4:30am with around $3,000 in damage. The second call around 2:40pm was a residence at 5000 block of White Sand Road. The home was ventilated but no fire occurred. The home had a chemical smell from the ventilation. There were no injuries in either case.

–Two people were injured Monday morning during a three-vehicle collision on Roosevelt Road. St. Cloud Police were called to Roosevelt Road, west of Cooper Avenue South, just before 7:00am Monday. Officers said 73-year old Judith Ann Heeter of St. Cloud was driving the wrong way down eastbound Roosevelt Road when her vehicle hit a car driven by 58-year old Constance Kay Then of St. Cloud. Officers said a third vehicle hit both Heeter’s and Then’s vehicles. The driver of the third vehicle was not hurt. Heeter and Then were taken by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

–A St. Cloud man was taken to the emergency room after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car. Officers were called to the intersection of Seventh Street Southeast and Kilian Boulevard Southeast around 6:15pm Friday with a report of a car hitting a bicyclist. 26-year-old Marcus Albin Diedrich of Waite Park was heading west on Seventh Street Southeast, when he had attempted to make a left turn onto Kilian Boulevard. While Diedrich was trying to complete the turn, his car struck a bike operated by 21-year-old Christopher Lee Dosch of St. Cloud. Dosch was biking on the sidewalk while traveling east on Seventh Street Southeast at the time of the collision. Dosch was taken by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital for non life threatening injuries.

–Motorists on Interstate 94 in St. Cloud may encounter slow or stopped traffic as both directions of I-94 at Highway 15 are reduced to a single lane from 9:00am to 3:00pm Friday, December 11th. The closures are needed as crews conduct preparatory work ahead of a 2016 project that will resurface the I-94 bridges spanning Highway 15. –Little Falls Community Middle School will host parent teacher conferences on Monday 4-7pm at the middle school commons.

–Stearns County deputies have located the vehicle and identified several suspects involved in multiple reports of vandalism in the Freeport and Albany areas Saturday night.

–The Friends of Crane Meadows Natural Wildlife Refuge southeast of Little Falls on County Road 35 is hosting a Backyard Bird feeding program this Saturday morning from 9-12. Volunteers will be there to answer questions and help you assemble a small fly-through type feeder. The event is free and open to the public.

–There will be Parent-Teacher Conferences at the Pierz High School on Wednesday (tonight) from 3:30-7:30 pm in the PAC.

–The city of Pierz is holding a community meeting tonight at 7:00pm  at Pierz Senior Site. The meeting is to discuss a grant application for a possible community center. All members of the community and businesses are invited to attend and feel free to ask questions.

–Area residents, business owners and motorists are invited to attend an open house to learn about, and provide input on, the Highway 371 Nisswa to Jenkins four-lane expansion project. The open house will be held Tuesday at 4pm at the Pequot Lakes City Hall. Final design of the project is underway, construction will begin soon and all lanes of the new segment of Highway 371 are scheduled to open in fall 2017. Open house attendees will be able to learn more details and view preliminary layouts of the project, learn about construction plans and how the project will affect traffic, and have questions answered directly from the leaders of the design-build team.

–A St. Cloud man was injured Tuesday morning when he rear-ended a freight truck on Minnesota Highway 23. 23-year old Adrian Westerlund was driving west on Highway 23 shortly after 7:00am when he hit a truck that was getting up to speed near Stearns County Road 140. Westerlund was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with injuries the State Patrol did not consider life-threatening. The driver of the truck did not report injuries.

–After nearly 30 years of silence and suffering the communty of Paynesville was told Sunday that the unforgiveable acts of young boys being sexually assaulted in the late 1980s will never happen again. A community meeting at the high school auditorium with Paynesville police and Patty Wetterling spoke that the attacks done by one person does not define a community as a whole. The polcie chief stated there were eight unsolved cases of molested young boys around a 30 minute distance where Patty’s son Jacob was abducted in 1989. DNA evidence has linked 52-year-old Daniel Heinrich of Annandale to at least one of the sexual assaults but he has not been charged in the case. Heinrich was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography in federal court and faces a lenghty prison sentence if convicted on all charges against him.
