--It may still be 4 months away but the 70th Annual Minnesota’s Governor’s Fishing Opener is already in the works for the St. Cloud metro area, which is hosting the event for the first time. This year besides fishing there will be some kayak and canoe fishing, which has never been done before. Plans are to have some fishing below the dam, above the dam, and above the Sartell dam. They will use jet boats, regular boats, and pontoon boats. Shoreline fishing will also be part of the event. 550 to 600 members of the media, VIPs, and politicians will be in town that weekend, providing about 4-5 millions worth of free press and marketing for the St. Cloud metro area. Part of the requirements for hosting the fishing opener is to hold a community picnic. Convention And Visitors Bureau Executive Director Julie Lunning says they are anticipating as many as 10,000 people to show up for that one event. They also plan to highlight other amenities the St. Cloud metro area has while the media is in town. This year’s Governor’s Fishing opener starts on Thursday, May 11th and runs through Saturday, May 13th.

--A Burtrum man faces multiple charges after leading law enforcement officers on a three county chase Friday. A press release said deputies received a call at 2:45am on Friday from an anonymous person about a possible drunk driver. The caller told deputies that a pickup pulling a flatbed trailer had parked his vehicle in a snow bank at a business, north of Sauk Rapids in Benton County. Shortly after the call a deputy saw the pickup leaving the location. The vehicle turned north and began driving in the road median. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver of the pickup accelerated and weaved across both lanes of traffic. The driver continued north to Rice, then turned west and crossed the Mississippi River into Stearns County. The pursuit continued into Morrison County where spike strips were deployed. According to the release, the driver of the pickup drove over the spikes. The driver was later stopped near Upsala after two Morrison County deputies performed a pursuit intervention tactic. Officers gave the driver multiple orders to exit the vehicle. The driver was later subdued by a stun gun when he reached into the back of the pickup's cab. The driver 35-year old Chad Bushman of Burtrum faces four charges including fleeing a police officer, driving without a valid license and two counts of fourth degree DWI. Five law enforcement vehicles were damaged during the pursuit. Three received damage after driving over deployed road spikes, and two were damaged during the pursuit intervention tactic.
