NEWS
–Two renters are without a place to stay after a morning fire Sunday in Pequot Lakes. About 30 firefighters from Pequot Lakes, Nisswa, Pine River and Ideal Township battled the blaze in bitterly cold conditions Sunday around 8:30am on Honeysuckle Street. The fire destroyed the manufactured home that Jeffrey King and Renee Hines were renting. Firefighters stated that a portable heater may be to blame for the fire but the exact cause was under investigation. Some of the firefighters had to be treated for the cold conditions but there were no injuries.

–Little Falls Police reported in the past week the arrest of a 47-year-old woman on domestic assault charges, a burglary report of a mini four wheeler stolen from a residence on 5th Street Northwest worth $300, a burglary was also reported on the 600 block of Third Street Northeast last week and theft of an assault rifle from a residence on the 1000 block of 5th Avenue Northeast. Anyone with information on any of the incidents is asked to call Little Falls Police at 616-5570.

–The Crow Wing River Basin Forage Council is hosting the 16th Annual winter workshop for cattle producers on February 11th at Central Lakes College in Staples. Producers will get a chance to have discussion on bull selection and cow efficiencies for best calving practices. The featured speaker is Kris Ringwall of North Dakota State University’s Dickinson Research Extension Center who will discuss “making sound choices in today’s cattle industry”. The sessions are hoping to equip producers with sound tools to use around bull selection and herd management. –46-year old Sean Timothy Kelly of Burtrum was convicted January 7th in Morrison County District Court of one felony count of first-degree burglary from an incident in May of 2014. Kelly had the following charges dismissed as part of a plea bargain: one felony count each of second-degree and third-degree burglary along with fifth-degree possession of marijuana, three felony counts of receiving stolen property and one misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property. Kelly was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $4,495, of which $4,360 was restitution.

–Around 3:50am on Saturday the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office became aware of a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Edgeton Road and MN Hwy 22 in Munson Township. 22-year old Tyler Mandelko of Richmond had been transported to the St Cloud Hospital by private party. While at the hospital, the private party reported the crash to a St Cloud Officer and they forwarded the information to the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy investigated the report and met with Tyler Mandelko. The deputy was told that Mandelko was traveling east on Edgeton Road, as he approached the bridge crossing Long Lake, he veered towards the south ditch and hit the bridge support. After hitting the bridge support, his truck became airborne and rolled. The truck came to a rest on the driver side along the east bank partially in the water. Impairment is believed to be a factor regarding the crash. Mandelko was treated for his injuries at the hospital. The crash remains under investigation.

–A central Minnesota woman took part recently on “Cake Wars” on the Food Network. Amanda Hansen of Sartell along with baker Sarah Watts were challenged with making Dr. Seuss themed cakes. Hansen has been decorating cakes for 10 years and currently works at the Coborn’s in Sartell.

–Isaac Schultz from Upsala was crowned the 2016 Minnesota State Auctioneers Association (MSAA) Champion Auctioneer from a talented field of 17 auctioneers from Minnesota and surrounding states. Isaac will represent Minnesota at this year’s International Auctioneer Championship at Grand Rapids, Michigan July 19th-23rd. Auctioneers from across Minnesota and surrounding states attended the 2016 annual Minnesota State Auctioneers Association convention January 14th to 16th. The event was held at the Minneapolis Marriot West. The Minnesota State Auctioneer’s Association promotes the auction method of marketing to all buyers and sellers through continued professionalism, education and experience.

–A St. Cloud man has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking women and agreed to a sentence of more than 13 years in prison. 39-year old Terrell Fields pleaded guilty last week to one count of engaging in the sex trafficking of an individual. He was scheduled to stand trial this week, but pleaded guilty instead. Fields previously has been convicted in Iowa of pimping, which is a felony. He was on supervised release for that offense.

–The city of St. Cloud last week joined a class-action lawsuit that accuses companies of fixing the cost of a chemical used to purify drinking water. If price-fixing did occur, it could have cost St. Cloud taxpayers more than $850,000. St. Cloud found a discrepancy of the price the city has paid for liquid aluminum sulfate compared to market estimates of what the chemical might have cost. St. Cloud joins Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth and Rochester in the lawsuit. The Minneapolis-based law firm Lockridge Grindal Nauen filed the first lawsuit on behalf of Rochester on December 1st. The firm’s complaint alleges the manufacturers and distributors of aluminum sulfate conspired to artificially boost the price of their product, which if true would violate federal antitrust laws. The city uses aluminum sulfate to help remove impurities from river water at its water treatment plant.

–The man who died Sunday from possible carbon monoxide poisoning on Leech Lake was identified. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as 34-year old Jared Nels Johnson of Akeley.

SPORTS
MLB= The Cincinnati Reds announced that all time hits leader Pete Rose will be inducted into their Hall of Fame honors during their hall of fame weekend June 24-26th which will also bring back the 1976 Reds who won the World Series, which Rose was part of. Rose will also have his number 14 retired by the Reds organization who stated that enough time had passed for Rose to receive his honors. Rose was banned from Baseball after betting on games in 1989 and his lifetime ban from the Hall of Fame was recently upheld by MLB.
