–Two men arrested as part of a law enforcement prostitution operation conducted in October in Breezy Point are now officially facing charges. 52-year old Robert Joseph Hennen of Pierz and 35-year old Roger Louis Carriere Jr. of Grand Rapids each face a gross misdemeanor charge of soliciting prostitution in a public place. Both men were arrested by Breezy Point Police after showing up for arranged meetings with a fictional escort in a Breezy Point hotel room through a classified advertising website. On October 13th both men initiated contact with the phone number provided in the ad placed by police. According to the complaints, officers searched both Carriere and Hennen at the determined location and both had initiated in the conversation they expected to have sex and located cash equivalent to an arranged price and cell phones with phone numbers matching those corresponding with an undercover officer. The men were arrested in the first operation outside of Baxter in Crow Wing County this year as area law enforcement look to step up enforcement in sex trafficking, part of a state- and nationwide trend.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture report that listed the advertised retail prices per pound for the period between November 20th to November 26th said the average price for fresh whole birds had gone up 20 cents for hens, and 18 cents for toms. For frozen whole birds, the average price went up five cents for hens, and eight cents for toms. The average price in the Midwest region of the country for both fresh whole toms and hens was $1.70 per pound.  Results from the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 30th annual informal price survey of traditional food items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table said the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for 10 is $50.11, up 70 cents from last year’s average of $49.41.

–On Monday the Minnesota State Court of Appeals upheld the 2014 conviction of Jason Kirk for Criminal Sexual Conduct in the First Degree. On July 24 2014, a Morrison County jury found Kirk guilty of sexually assaulting a six year old girl.  Kirk was sentenced 144 month prison sentence. Kirk appealed the conviction, claiming his confession to investigators was coerced. The judge found that Kirk understood his (Miranda) rights, was “articulate and educated,” and he never asked that questioning be stopped. At trial Kirk’s confession was admitted into evidence and played to the jury. The Court of Appeals agreed with the district court’s ruling, noting that Kirk never asked for food, water, or for an attorney. The appellate court noted that the Defendant was neither threatened nor promised lenient treatment in exchange for his confession.

–Searchers located the body of a St. Cloud native on Saturday who was killed in an avalanche in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. Crews used sonar technology to find Michael David Meyers on Saturday in the John Muir Wilderness east of Fresno. The 25-year-old suffered massive injuries in the avalanche. Meyers was a St. Cloud resident and graduate of St. John’s Prep. Meyers graduated from St. John’s Prep in 2008 and went on to study physics at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Los Angeles Times reports Meyers texted his roommate November 5th to say he was going to Mount Russell in Inyo National Forest. The area, where avalanches are common, was slammed by a winter like storm. A search began November 18th after someone found Meyers’ car. Meyers was an experienced climber who left a detailed itinerary for his solo trip — which helped authorities locate the body.
