--Friends, family, dignitaries and members of Civil Air Patrol gathered October 12 at the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport to celebrate the achievements of two Morrison County students, Cadet Lt. Col. Nordica Dodge and Cadet 2nd Lt. Riley Scherping. Dodge, a 2024 Pierz-Healy High School graduate and student at Oak Hills Christian College, earned the Eaker Award in the Civil Air Patrol cadet program. With it comes the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. The award is named after Gen. Ira C. Eaker, a military officer and aviation pioneer who was a key figure in the development of the U.S. Air Force. Scherping, a junior at Little Falls Community High School, earned the Mitchell Award in the Civil Air Patrol cadet program. With it comes the rank of Cadet Second Lieutenant. The award is named after Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell, a vigorous advocate for the use of air power in the military. Of the 68,000 volunteer members nationally, over 32,000 are cadet members. However, less than 700 cadets earn the General Eaker Award and less than 4,500 cadets earn the Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell award. Civil Air Patrol was established Dec. 1, 1941, as an all-volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and owns over 560 aircraft that make up the largest fleet of single-engine aircraft in the world. Additionally, the ceremony included the cadet commander Change of Command, where Dodge relinquished command to Scherping. Dodge is the daughter of Ken and Heike Dodge, Freedhem. Scherping is the son of Theresa and Glen Welters, Randall.
