The first weekend of Minnesota’s gun-deer season produced a harvest that was up about 6.3 percent compared with the same period last year. Preliminary numbers released by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday showed a harvest of 68,401 animals registered through Monday. That compares with a opening-weekend harvest of 64,365 animals for the same period last season. Hunters have 48 hours to register the deer they shoot. Back-to-back harsh winters prompted the DNR to take that conservative approach to this season’s regulations. Many parts of the state are buck-only permit areas. A mild winter allowed the population to rebound, even in the hardest-hit northeast, if preliminary numbers are a good indicator. Merchant said preliminary harvest numbers were up in the northeast’s 100-series permit region — with 16,488 deer taken, compared with 15,320 over the same period last year. Through Friday, 419,035 firearms deer hunting licenses had been sold in Minnesota. That compares with 393,549 for the same period last year. The firearms deer season runs through Sunday while the  archery season for deer runs through December 31st.
