A Pequot Lakes landlord has been charged with burglary and firearm assault after allegedly trying to evict one of his tenants at gunpoint Monday. The tenant told police he had lived at the place he rented from 55-year old John J. Cosgrove, on Forest Knolls Road in Crow Wing County. The tenant, said he had gotten into an argument with Cosgrove’s nephew about a camper parked at the residence. Cosgrove himself arrived shortly afterward, entering the house and pointing a handgun at the tenant. After the tenant called 911, Cosgrove left for his own residence on Crow Wing County Road 16. Authorities located Cosgrove, who admitted to being at the residence but denied threatening him or owning a handgun. Police obtained a search warrant for Cosgrove’s home and allegedly found the handgun in a grill outside. Cosgrove was charged with felony first degree burglary with a dangerous weapon, with a potential maximum penalty of 20 years and a $35,000 fine; and felony second degree firearm assault, with a potential maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine. The mandatory minimum sentence for the firearm assault is three years in prison.
