A staff member at the St. Cloud Children’s Home has been cited for “maltreatment as to neglect” in an incident where a 14-year-old resident on risk status for suicide attempts was left without supervision in a “calming room” at the facility. The victim, who lived in a secure unit, later was found with a sweatshirt wrapped around their neck and around the leg of a desk. The person was alert but not responding when found by staff, yet returned to scheduled activities 10 minutes later and showed no evidence of an injury. The incident occurred May 19th. The facility completed an internal review and the staff person responsible for the alleged victim was not disqualified by DHS from providing direct care services. The maltreatment finding is subject to appeal by the individual staff member and it was unclear whether there could yet be any fine involved.
