Stearns County deputies investigated a stabbing that occurred early Thursday morning. Around 2:45am, deputies were called to St. Cloud Hospital for a report of a man with stab wounds. Justin Kunkel reported to hospital staff that the assault occurred at a residence on the south side of Pearl Lake, in Maine Prairie Township. Further investigation revealed that Kunkel’s father had picked him up at the scene and brought him to the hospital. Kunkel’s father was able to lead deputies to the assault location on Co. Rd. 8. Several males found in the residence were questioned about the incident. Witnesses said Jon Gately and Justin Kunkel were arguing. At some  point in the argument Gately pulled a folding knife from his pocket. Kunkel ran towards Gately and tackled him. The two fell to the ground with Kunkel receiving several stab wounds. Jon Gately was subsequently arrested and is being held pending court appearance on assault charges. The incident remains under investigation. There was no further report on Kunkel’s condition.
