NEWS
--A Foley man is dead and a woman wounded after a shooting shortly before noon Tuesday in Montevideo. According to the Montevideo Police Department, 55-year old David Dale Schwartz of Foley, was dead at the scene at 103 South 4th Street in Montevideo. 41-year old Angela Marie Haugerud was wounded and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis with unknown injuries. Schwartz’s body was taken to the Anoka County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, but Montevideo Police Chief Adam Christopher said it appears Schwartz died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said Schwartz and Haugerud knew each other but the extent of their relationship is unknown. The shooting is actively under investigation. There is no threat to the public from this incident.

--There was a fire at Apollo High School in St. Cloud Wednesday night. The fire department was called to the school at about 7:00pm for an accidental construction related fire in a classroom. It was contained to a single room, however, several other classrooms and hallways in the building were damaged by smoke. The fire sprinkler system was not operational because it was being worked on when the fire occurred. No one was hurt and no damage estimate yet.

--Strong thunderstorms led to massive flooding in portions Mille Lacs, Kanabec and Aitkin counties on Thursday morning. Some areas saw 4-7 inches within an hour. Aitkin County had over 10 inches of rainfall in just a few hours that led to streets flooding over to basements and other travel issues on Thursday morning.

--The first new segment of Business Highway 371/South 6th Street between Willow Street and Joseph Street will open to residents and businesses by noon today. Signed detours remain in place while crews complete the Business Highway 371 reconstruction project.

--More road work starting later this month, as Highway 210 in Todd County near Staples will be closed starting July 23rd. The Highway 210 bridge spanning Moran Creek to the east of County Road 9 in Todd County will be closed for repairs until August 25th.

--A new study is using underwater listening devices to find out why more young walleye in a Minnesota lakes aren't making it to adulthood. Acoustic telemetry will be used to track the movements of the juvenile fish in Lake Mille Lacs. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe hopes to test a hypothesis that warming lake temperatures are contributing to the recent walleye population decline. Scientists have placed 61 acoustic receivers in the lake in a grid pattern more than 9,800 feet apart. They aim to implant transmitters in about 70 adult walleye this month. Biologist Carl Klimah says researchers will also tag 35 juvenile fish in the fall. Researchers hope to see if walleye are moving into smaller areas trying to seek better water temperatures.

--Little Falls Radio has promoted Corey Fink to the position of Little Falls Radio Station Manager. Corey graduated from Little Falls Community High School in 2003 and has been employed in varying roles at Little Falls Radio since 2005. Corey will remain as News Director and an on air talent but will now add the Station Manager role to his daily duties. Congratulations to Little Falls native Corey Fink on his new position with Little Falls Radio.

--Morrison County Chaplaincy will be hosting a golf tournament on August 10th at Eagles Landing. All proceeds go to help the Chaplaincy program. The fee also pays for a breakfast buffet that day. For more information contact Greg Valentine at 631-2894.

--The Benton County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a test of the civil defense sirens in Watab Township next week on Wednesday at 1:00pm. Benton County civil defense sirens are regularly tested the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00pm. These regular tests are canceled or postponed when the potential for severe weather threatens the area at or near the scheduled testing time. The regularly scheduled test from July 4th was postponed due to the presence of potentially severe weather in the area. The July test for the Watab Township civil defense sirens has since been rescheduled for July 18th at 1:00pm. During these regular civil defense siren tests, citizens are encouraged to review their personal safety plan for the threat of severe weather.

--Earlier this week Little Falls Mayor Greg Zylka signed the “Think It Local” proclamation for July. By shopping local you can support local families, local businesses and the local economy. The “Think It Local” is a campaign from the Little Falls Business Association and its member businesses.

--Papa John's founder John Schnatter, who already resigned as CEO over a series of PR blunders, is stepping down as chairman of the board after allegedly using a racial slur during a conference call. Schnatter founded the pizza chain back in 1984.

VL= Victory League playoffs begin tonight in Pierz and Nisswa. Other first round games are tomorrow. The winners and losers of the first round games will play on Sunday. The elimination game in the west division will be the game of the week Sunday 1:30pm on KLTF.
