NEWS
--The Morrison County Sheriffs Office recently shared the following information on social media. Unfortunately scams are not going away anytime soon. These scam artists will continue to trick people and make money. One recent scam that their office received was a Postal Money Order that was written to a gentleman that posted an ad that he was selling lab pups. The money order was written for an amount greater than he was asking for the lab. The instructions from the scam artist was to cash the money order, keep the agreed upon cash for the pup and then send the remaining money back to an address in Nevada. Another scam that they recently received was regarding someone claiming to be a representative from Amazon, stating there was unusual activity/transactions on their account. The scam artist wanted to know the name of their bank so they could stop payment. The person that was called was asked to verify their name and to confirm their social security number. Just a reminder that if something appears suspicious in nature, do not give out your personal information. You can always call the business in question if you have questions. Scam artists will always put pressure on you and want answers immediately. They are convincing and this is the reason why so many people fall victim to scams. If it’s too good to be true, its more than likely a scam. Please be careful with any email, phone calls or letters that you receive that seem suspicious in nature. As always, their office is here to help anyone with questions.

--A Paynesville High School student is charged with threatening to "shoot up" the school. 18-year-old Matthew Herr-Ramirez, of Grove City, is charged with five counts of threats of violence. According to the criminal complaint, Herr-Ramirez had been making threats about bringing a gun to school and shooting students and staff. Records show a student told officers Herr-Ramirez was planning to shoot three certain staff members and a specific student. Court records show another student told police Herr-Ramirez was talking about his plans to shoot people at the school and showed the student a picture of a gun on his cell phone. Officers arrested Herr-Ramirez at his home on Monday. Police say he was in possession of an airsoft gun at the time of the arrest. His next court appearance is November 2nd.

--The University of Minnesota is planning to combine graduation ceremonies next May in a "University-wide commencement" at Huntington Bank Stadium, which may prevent seniors from walking across the stage to receive diplomas, according to emails sent to students this week in various colleges. The shift in venues appears related to renovations at 3M Arena at Mariucci, where many colleges typically hold individual commencements. While some schools, like the College of Biological Sciences and College of Liberal Arts, have simply described vague plans for graduation ceremonies in May, the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences were told because of the large number of graduates expected at each ceremony approximately 6,600 undergraduate students and 1,900 masters and doctoral students, the events will not include individual students walking across the stage to have their name announced and receive a diploma. The joint ceremony will focus instead on the conferral of degrees. This has given some mixed views by students.
