NEWS
--The Burlington Northern Railroad Co. will be conducting a grade crossing repair project that will result in the closure of BEAR Road in Cushing today and Tuesday. Highway users are encouraged to find alternative routes or follow the established detour.

--The Little Falls Summer Musical will be held this week. They are performing the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The PG-13 style musical consists of local actors and a live orchestra and will be performed Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00pm and also a matinee at 2:00pm Saturday at the Charles D. Martin Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at local businesses and online. For more information go to the website lfsummermusical.com.

--One person is dead after a fatal accident Thursday night around 11:30 in Benton County. Julie Gowen of Breezy Point was on Highway 10 at West St. Germain Street in St. Cloud when a pedestrian walked across the roadway on a red light. The vehicle had right of away and struck the pedestrian. 57-year old Judith Ramirez of St. Cloud was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver Gowen was not hurt.

--A 25-year-old man has died in a collision with a freight train in western Minnesota. Otter Tail County authorities say the man was driving a pickup that collided Thursday morning with an eastbound train at a crossing controlled by a stop sign west of Perham. The driver was killed. The state patrol stated that the man lived in Otter Tail but has not released his name.

--We have received a correction on a news story we carried last week. Many news sources recently incorrectly reported that Minnesota’s new electronic monitoring law (occasionally referred to with the term “granny cams”) went into effect on August 1st, 2019. This is an incorrect date. The law, which passed during the 2019 legislative session, goes into effect on January 1st, 2020, and applies to the following types of facilities: Nursing facilities; Skilled nursing facilities, Boarding care homes and Assisted living facilities (registered housing with services settings operating under 144G).

--Upsala Heritage Days is this weekend. This year with a wild west theme of “Round-Up.” The city’s annual medallion hunt will kick off the event today with clues as Upsala City Hall. Friday night there is music in the city park starting at 6pm, then Saturday begins with the 5K run at 8am at the high school. Parade at 10:30am, after the parade, fun for the whole family will continue in the city park, beginning at noon with a wild west show, including a wild west town and wild west shoot-outs. Other activities include kids games, train rides, inflatables, face painting, pony rides, a bean bag toss, a petting zoo and a car show. The beer garden opens at noon in the city park, bingo will be played and a pie judging contest and a cake walk will take place on the grounds. Those who want to know more about the city’s history may head to the Borgstrom House, for various events sponsored by the Upsala Area Historical Society. Local folks are invited to bring their lawn tractor or ATV to come pull in the third annual wild card garden tractor and ATV pull at 5pm. Saturday evening continues with music entertainment in the park provided by All Time Favorites, DJ and live music show The Fire Department will draw the winners for its raffle and fireworks begin at dusk. The traditional Belgian waffle breakfast will be held from Sunday from 9am-12pm in the school cafeteria. All in Upsala later this week.

--The Minnesota State Patrol reported they ticketed nearly 700 motorists during the first couple days of the new Hands Free Law. This was from 12:01am August 1st through 8:00am August 3rd where 693 were ticketed for texting and driving and using a cell phone that was not hands free. A reminder that the law is now in effect.

--A Nisswa man was injured Saturday on Highway 371 in Crow Wing County when his motorcycle was struck by a pickup around 6pm. 43-year-old Michael Anderson was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital with reportedly serious injuries. The pickup driver and passenger were not injured in the accident.

--It was announced already that Swanville will have an operating levy vote in the district on November 5th and now Sauk Rapids Rice sounds like they will do the same. The Sauk Rapids-Rice School Board reviewed a long-term plan for facilities improvements, known as One Storm One Future, that includes a November 5th referendum to replace Pleasantview Elementary as well as additional long-term investments that will preserve the district’s other buildings. The school board will take final action on August 5, which includes submission of the plan to the Minnesota Department of Education for approval. TWINS= Twins outslug Royals on Friday as Nelson Cruz drives in five runs to win 11-9. Nelson Cruz for the 2nd time this season hits three homeruns in a game as the Twins rout KC 11-3 on Saturday night where they inducted Joe Nathan into the Twins Hall of Fame. Twins get the sweep in a pitchers duel on Sunday to win 3-0 and take the 3 games. The Twins (69-42) open series with Atlanta Braves tonight with pregame at 6:30pm from Target Field on Q92 WYRQ.
REGION 8C= Saturday's action Pierz Bulldog go 13 innings to beat Randall 4-3, Nisswa blasted St. Stephen 20-0 to win a state qualifying game. Ft. Ripley hit a number of long balls to win 15-4 over Avon in a state qualifying game. Buckman held off elimination beating Upsala 8-5 to end a long day of ball Saturday. Buckman and Avon won on Sunday to advance on to state. St. Stephen and Bulldogs eliminated. The Region Tournament wraps up this weekend in Avon.
5K= Peter Borash won the Plate River Day 5K Run Saturday with a time of 19:52. Ashley Nelson won the top female finisher and finished 2nd overall just behind Borash with a score of 21:37. The top 3 male finishers were Borash of Royalton, David Hartz of Cold Spring, and Daniel Price of Colorado. Women were Nelson first from Sartell, then Angie Bruns of Little Falls and Amanda Panek for Sartell.
CLASS B= Sobieski lost both games Saturday to Cold Spring.
