--At 1:04pm on Tuesday the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one vehicle accident on Haven Road, just south of 213th Street, approximately five miles north of Little Falls, in Belle Prairie Township. 44-year old Pamala Doucette of Little Falls was traveling south on Haven Road when her vehicle left the roadway, hit some trees and rolled. Doucette was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency responders assisted in getting her out of the vehicle. She was
transported by ambulance to St. Gabriel’s Hospital and then transferred to North Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
--St. Cloud State University is holding their annual move-in day activities today. As a result, a number of streets in and around the campus area will be closed to traffic. The street closures are east of 5th Avenue South and south of 4th Street South. SCSU will have the entrances to the middle of campus barricaded to help with traffic flow and the busy move-in activities of first-year students. The streets will reopen on Friday after the returning students' move-in process.
--Authorities rescued a mother and son Monday, Aug. 19, who were in a canoe when it capsized on Leech Lake. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was called at 2:52pm to a report of two overdue canoeists on Leech Lake near a resort in the area of Pine Point Road, on the west side of the lake, north of Onigum. Deputies responded and learned a 56-year-old Monticello woman and her 28-year-old son of Minneapolis left a lodge via canoe at 8:30am and had not returned. Deputies and resort staff immediately began searching Leech Lake. At 7:15pm, a canoe was located on the north shore of Leech Lake near Hardwood Point and a short time later the mother and son were located on shore in a very remote wooded area by a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. After the canoe capsized, the two floated in the water with the boat for several hours, eventually ending up on shore. They were transported back to the resort and treated at the scene for any injuries but were not taken to the hospital.
--Morrison County Chaplain Gregg Valentine announced on KLTF Wednesday that if you buy two pre-sale tickets to the Smoke and Tires Fundraiser for August 30th at the Falls Ballroom you can get a t-shirt created for the event. The ticket includes a rib fest with many to choose from, adult beverages and a t-shirt to the event and all proceeds go to Morrison County Chaplaincy Program. The event all includes a classic car show, DJ music, see fire trucks, mobile command center from Sheriff's Office, other food vendors and much more to support the chaplaincy program in Morrison County. Presale tickets are $20, kids meal tickets are $10 and under 5 are free. The tickets will be $25 at the door. Gregg will also be selling the tickets and the t-shirt deal at Coborn's Marketplace from 5-8pm on Friday.
--This Sunday is Pierz Oktoberfest events in the area start on Friday with Wacky Hacker Golf Tournament by Horizon Health Services at the Pierz Golf Course, 5K run for Hospice Saturday morning at Horizon Health, free concert on the church lawn Saturday night, Parade is Sunday at 11am with events in the park to follow throughout the afternoon. --The Minnesota State Fair opens today east of St. Paul and runs through Labor Day September 2nd. Last year they broke the all time attendance record with over 2 million visitors. Tonight at the Grandstand is Hootie and the Blowfish and Bare Naked Ladies.
--Amy Kyllo, a 19-year-old college student from Byron, Minn., representing Olmsted County, was crowned the 66th Princess Kay of the Milky Way in an evening ceremony at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds last night. Kyllo will serve as the official goodwill ambassador for nearly 3,000 Minnesota dairy farm families. She is the daughter of Paul and Susan Kyllo, and attends the Association Free Lutheran Bible School. Throughout her yearlong reign as Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Kyllo will make public appearances to help connect consumers to Minnesota’s dairy farm families. She will work to bring dairy to life through conversations, classroom visits and various speaking engagements. Kyllo’s first official duty as Princess Kay will be to sit in a rotating cooler in the Dairy Building (located at the corner of Judson Avenue and Underwood Street) for nearly eight hours to have her likeness sculpted in a 90-pound block of butter the first two days of the Minnesota State Fair. This year marks butter sculptor Linda Christensen’s 48th year carving the Princess Kay of the Milky Way winner and finalists at the Minnesota State Fair.
--A 24-year-old Browerville woman was injured when her vehicle collided with a semi-truck Wednesday morning around 9:15am on Highway 71 near Bertha in Todd County. Sheila Klein was traveling on Highway 71 and crossed in front of the semi driven by 54-year-old Juan Mendoza of Willmar. Mendoza was not hurt. Klein was taken to Long Prairie Hospital and treated for her injuries.
--Two more men a 53-year-old Baxter man and a 19-year-old Long Prairie man were charged Friday in a Brainerd courtroom with felony child solicitation with the intention of engaging in sexual conduct. The two join three other men charged last week as a result of a law enforcement undercover chat sting operation. In all five cases, a law enforcement officer posed as a 14-year-old persona and communicated with the defendants. Charged Friday were Eddy Alejandro Aquino Reynoso, 19, Long Prairie, and Douglas Arnold Odegard, 53, Baxter. According to the criminal complaint filed against Reynoso, law enforcement conducted a proactive undercover chat operation August 14th. As part of the operation an investigator, passing as a 14-year-old, communicated with Reynoso via an internet app. The conversation began as a group chat, but then the defendant began a one-on-one chat with the persona. He made arrangements to meet at a pre-arranged location in Brainerd. He drove from Long Prairie and upon arrival at the designated location, he was arrested. Reynoso admitted to law enforcement he arrived at the location with the intent of having a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl. Reynoso’s next court appearance was scheduled for October 15th and Odegard’s next court appearance was scheduled for August 28th.
