NEWS
--The DNR reported that new regulations were released on Tuesday and deer hunting licenses are now available. Among the changes, hunters may notice are reduced harvest limits in northeast and north central Minnesota, where successive severe winters have been hard on deer populations. In central and southern Minnesota, snow was not as deep and conditions were far more favorable for herd survival. Hunters in most of Minnesota can expect a season similar to last year in terms of how many deer they can harvest,” said Barb Keller, DNR big game program leader. “The lower bag limits in northeast and north-central Minnesota aim to allow deer populations to recover after back-to-back severe winters. Deer are resilient and we are hopeful deer populations there will gradually recover along with lower harvests, especially if we get some mild winters. The regulation books are available now through the DNR website. Here are some of the important dates in the coming 2023 deer hunting season. Archery: Saturday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Dec. 31. Youth and early antlerless: Thursday, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 22. Firearms: Saturday, Nov. 4, with various closing dates depending on a hunter’s location Muzzleloader: Saturday, Nov. 25, through Sunday, Dec. 10 Late CWD hunt Dec. 15-17.

--A St. Cloud woman accused of murdering her infant child has pleaded guilty. 28-year-old Fardoussa Abdillahi has pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree intentional murder but without premeditation. The guilty plea comes on the heels of a mental competency exam last fall that found Abdillahi had been restored to competency to face the charges. The plea takes 1st-degree premeditated murder off the table and therefore a mandatory life sentence if convicted. Records show Abdillahi stabbed the 3 1/2-month-old boy before putting him in a plastic garbage bag and throwing the bag in the dumpster. In a statement to police, Abdillahi allegedly said after the boy was born, she started having headaches and feelings of worry and fear. She was upset that the child's father was denying the boy was his and wondered how she was going to get help. A mental competency exam in February 2022 determined Abdillahi was mentally unfit to face the charge. A judge later determined Abdillahi was restored to competency after a review of her progress report. Abdillahi will be sentenced on October 18th.
