--The frigid temperatures in the past week has not helped as much as many would think with the lake ice conditions. Since December 29th, there have been reports of vehicles going through the ice in Sauk Centre, two incidents in Becker County and a snowmobile on the north end of Lake Mille Lacs. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt but all were treated for hypothermia. A reminder again from the DNR and law enforcement that lake ice is never 100-percent safe. Ice could be 14-18 inches thick in one area and a hundred feet away less than 2-3 inches along some ridges. The DNR also states that if your vehicle does go through the ice, you are financially responsible for getting it out. That cost could be thousands of dollars.
