--Lieutenant Gordon Shank of the Minnesota State Patrol spoke yesterday on KLTF Party Line and stated that speed has been a major problem in the state this year. Shank addressed the 367 fatalities on Minnesota roadways of Wednesday morning and that there were 4 fatalities on Minnesota roadways in a 16 hour period between Monday into Tuesday in Stearns, Otter Tail, Dakota and Anoka counties. Motorists are asked to slow down and because troopers cannot be everywhere, he asked if you noticed speeders, impaired drivers, reckless driving and other issues call 911 or call your local authorities and announce this to them as that helps them work to get these individuals off the roadways. The State Patrol is also hiring and for more information got the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website for more details.

--An aquatic invasive species has been discovered in a portion of the Mississippi River in north central Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed starry stonewort in a section of the river between Wolf Lake upstream and Cass Lake downstream. The stretch of the Mississippi River is within the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe boundaries and was found at a resort on the river. Starry stonewort was discovered in Wolf Lake in 2018 and in Cass Lake in 2016. This marks the 19th Minnesota water body to become infested with starry stonewort. It is algae that look similar to native aquatic plants and can form dense mats, interfere with the use of the lake and choke out native vegetation. Starry stonewort has never been eradicated from any U.S. lake or river, but treatments can reduce the risk of spread.
