Police remained on scene to work with school staff to get the school back to normal which dismissed as its regular time yesterday.

–Stearns County reported approximately 20,000 gallons of liquid manure leaked out of an above ground storage tank southwest of Holdingford Wednesday afternoon. 63-year-old Mark Leukam of Albany, reported he had an ongoing manure leak from his above ground liquid manure storage tank. The tank holds 400,000 gallons and currently contained about 350,000 gallons. It was estimated that approximately 20,000 gallons leaked out and drained into the low land area. The low land area also contains an unnamed intermittent stream that flows easterly continuing through several miles of low land swampy area before connecting with Krain Creek, north of Two Rivers Lake. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office contacted Stearns County Environmental Services and the State Duty Officer to report the event. Stearns County Deputies responded to the scene, along with the Holdingford Fire Department, Stearns County Highway Department, and an Environmental Services feedlot specialist. Stearns County Emergency Management, the MN Pollution Control Agency, and the MN Department of Natural Resources were also notified. The leak was eventually stopped with a temporary fix. A trench and dirt berm were dug to stop and contain any future leaks until the tank can be fixed. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office flew the Office UAV to obtain aerial photos of the spill and surrounding area. On-going arrangements are being made to empty the tank so the area causing the leak can be repaired. The MN Pollution Control Agency will continue to monitor the spill and pumping efforts, and work with the farm owner to mitigate the spill.

–This Sunday is the 24th Annual Blessing of the Animals at Washington Park on 4th Street Northeast in Little Falls starting at noon. The event is put on by St. Francis Convent and First Lutheran Church.

–The Pierz City Council met on Monday night. At the meeting the council set their preliminary budget and levy. Remember these amounts can not be raised but may still be lowered when finalized at the Truth in Taxation Meeting on December 9th. The preliminary levy in Pierz was increased by 2.5%. The preliminary budget was about 1.1 million dollars more next year than this year. Most of these funds (approximately $830,000) are accounted for by the city taking over the billing of the Rich Prairie Sewer and Water District. The city started handling this billing on January 1st, 2019 but next year is the first year it is included in the budget. Since it is billing, funds spent will be matched by funds received so a more accurate measure of the preliminary budget increase would be closer to a $180,000 increase when ignoring the zero balance net gain of handling the Rich Prairie Sewer and Water District billing. Also at the meeting Monday the council approved a small accessory structure for Scott Benoit. They approved the hiring of Matthew Stumpf as an assistant park complex superintendent. The council accepted the resignation of Drew Gruber from the Fire Department effective back on September 10th. The council approved the policy and rules resolution and process resolution as it pertains to solar power by cogeneration. The council set two upcoming city council workshops. The first is this coming Monday at 5:30pm to go through applications for the Deputy Clerk Position and the second will be October 8th at 5:00pm to interview the Deputy Clerk candidates. Next meeting is on October 14th.

–A Cosmos man is jailed after Meeker County authorities say he crashed his car into a house while drunk. Emergency responders were called out to a home in the 600 block of South Milky Way Street in Cosmos Tuesday night around 9:20pm. Sheriff Brian Cruze says the driver, 35-year old Michael Rinnels of Cosmos, had fled the scene. He is believed to be the only occupant of the vehicle. Authorities later found Rinnels hiding in his home and arrested him on suspicion of DUI and multiple arrest warrants from multiple counties. Deputies brought Rinnels to the hospital for treatment and then booked him into the Meeker County Jail. No one was home at the time of the crash, but the sheriff says the house has significant damage. Additional obstruction of justice charges are possible against people who may have helped Rinnels hide from deputies.
