NEWS
--The Morrison County Sheriff's Office reported an ATV accident with injuries Saturday at 1:51pm on 193rd Street in Buh Township 5 miles north of Pierz. 68-year-old George Gold of Pierz was operating the ATV when he lost control taking a turn and rolled it on a neighboring property. Gold was treated a hospital with minor injuries.

--The Morrison County Sheriff's Office reported a one vehicle accident Sunday night 11:55pm on Great River Road in Swan River Township about two miles south of Little Falls. The sheriff's office said a 17-year-old male from Little Falls was traveling south on Great River Road lost control on a curve causing the vehicle to hit the ditch and roll several times. Both the driver and 15-year-old female passenger from Sauk Centre were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. The case is still under investigation.

--The Pierz Police Department has posted more pictures of a person in questions from last week. The subject was captured on surveillance cameras walking up to residences in the early hours of August 24th. The police department said that posts of the man being in Rockville besides Pierz have started. --Authorities have released the name of the man who was struck and killed by a passenger train around 9:00am Friday. The Sherburne County Sheriffs Office says 48-year old Jeffrey Grewell of St. Cloud died when he was hit by the Amtrak train Friday just south of Clear Lake near 97th street.

--Last week county unemployment rates were released for July. Morrison County had 2.4% unemployment that is down from 2.7% in June and lower than the 3% rate last year in July. Here is how our nearby counties fared for July unemployment rates: Aitkin 2.5%, Benton and Cass 2.2%, Crow Wing 2.1%, Kanabec 2.5%, Mille Lacs 2.3%, Todd 2.2%, Sherburne 1.9%, Stearns 2%, and Wadena county at 2.8%. The city of Brainerd was at 2.4% unemployment and St. Cloud came in at 2.6%. Using the same non seasonally adjusted numbers the statewide unemployment in Minnesota in July was 2.1% and the national rate was 3.8%.

--A round of severe thunderstorms prompted a tornado warning for a brief period for Stearns County Sunday night. There were no confirmed touchdowns initially reported, but there were reports of small hail with this storm system. West of there was one report of a tornado touchdown with damage in Kandiyohi and another possible touchdown not confirmed in Renville County. Stearns County Emergency Management says there were reports of small hail up to a dime size in diameter in the Cold Spring area. Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reported a power line down earlier in the day near Lake Shamineau they investigated but didn't receive any storm damage reports from Sunday at his office.

--Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a storage shed in St. Cloud. The St. Cloud Police Department says shortly after 5:00am Saturday, crews responded to a storage building on fire at 510 Highway 10 South. Officials say the shed was fully engulfed, and the flames had also spread to the outside of the nearby main building. The storage building is considered a total loss, while the main building does not have any inside damage. No one was hurt in the fire, and the damage total is estimated at $11,000.

--The final Rock Roll & Stroll event of the year is this Thursday in Pierz from 5-8pm. Poker Walk, plenty of things to do and see.

--Pierz Superintendent George Weber spoke on KLTF Monday and said that the school year is looking great for Pierz. Weber said they have over a dozen new staff members and have been able to fill positions at the school. They could use one more custodian if someone is interested you can call Weber at 320-468-6458. Weber said athletics and events are all planned through the school year, they stated they continue to monitor the health situations but the same holds true as if a staff member or student is ill, stay home and get well first to help the school continue to remain in class for 2022. The school continues with their large project in the Ag room and HVAC work that will continue to be done in another year. The school also changed their website to pierzschools.org the idea was made to add more online and continue to get out the most information possible on the site so the upgrade and name change was made.

--Early goose hunting starts Saturday September 3 along with early Teal. Morning Dove hunting starts in Minnesota September 1. The most commonly shot game bird in the country is mourning doves. Hunters shot more than 12 million doves in the U.S. last year with Minnesotans harvesting 4,200 doves in 2021. Not usually in Minnesota but doves are the most popular bird to hunt in the southern states. Minnesota has a 15 dove limit starting September 1st and running until November 29. The 2nd year of a 3-year experimental early teal hunting season which is a 5-day season from September 3-7. Hunters can shoot 6 teal which is combined blue wing and green wing. The DNR says about 13,000 hunters participated in 2021 with roughly 51,000 team shot in Minnesota. Details from the DNR on waterfowl hunting are on the DNR website.

--More Minnesota Families will qualify for SNAP starting Thursday. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, income limit increases to 200% of the federal poverty level. Officials with the Minnesota Department of Human Services say now that a family of three making less than $46,000 may be eligible, an additional 1,400 households may become eligible for SNAP benefits. Officials say the new change won’t increase the monthly amount of SNAP assistance available for a family already enrolled, but that more Minnesota families will be eligible to receive nutrition assistance. The Minnesota Legislature changed the income limits in the 2022 session and it was signed into law by Governor Walz. This is the first increase in the income guidelines since 2010 when the income was raised from 130% to 165% of the federal poverty guideline.

--There is a classic car show tonight at the Emblom Brenny Funeral Service site in Little Falls across from the hospital. Food trucks, tours of the facility and classic cars on display tonight from 4-7pm.
