--The Little Falls City Council on Monday night voted in favor of adding the following question to the general election ballot for city residents in the fall: “Shall the City of Little Falls, Minnesota, be authorized to impose a sales and use tax of one-half of one percent (0.5%) to finance the acquisition and betterment of a new community center complex in the City?” The city council was in favor of letting the voters decide this issue this fall. Last year the city authorized a local option sales tax analysis report conducted by the University of Minnesota Extension Office in Brainerd. According to the analysis findings, the city of Little Falls expects this type of tax would collect $500,000 annually and 42% of revenue collected would be from residents living outside of city limits. This tax would be used exclusively to cover the costs of the project and any associated fees related to this project. The tax would last for a period of 20 years or until the entirety of the project is paid off (whichever comes first). The city of Little Falls expects $10 million dollars in revenue over the 20 year period. During the meeting the council wished to clarify that this tax would be for one cent of every two dollars spent. They also wished to clarify that projects like a splash pad or BMX trails could still be a part of this project, as a portion of the community center complex. Last night was a step towards this tax being enacted but it still needs a majority vote from city residents November 6th. After that it would need approval from the state legislature and Department of Revenue, but the largest obstacle is the election in November. The council also approved moving forward with contract negotiations with the firm Flaherty and Hood out of St. Paul as the new city attorney.
